Mick,
Don't know about cloudy, but my oil window is pretty filthy and needs replacing. Perhaps your's is just the same problem.
My mechanic didn't make much noise about it when asked - just oh yeah, looks like you need a new one. I don't know what sort of K's you've got but I'm given to understand that it can just be an age thing.
If it is milky/cloudy then I guess you've already covered that....
As far as the oil - I've never bothered asking what the shop uses but when I do it I use Penrite. Seems to work ok.
Have you got a 600ml soft drink bottle cut up and prepared for a mess-free filter removal?
ty
PS. one thing I almost forgot to say re the change - every new chain I've gotten has 'worn in'/'stretched a bit' over the first couple of weeks (1500-2000k's or so). I've accepted it as normal.

Yeah, I replaced the oil and filter, cleaned the bike and rode it 170km, but it's still shitty.
Old oil came out ok, just dirty black.
Cleaned the bike, which guaranteed the rain Sunday night/Monday morning. Damn thing needs cleaning again.

The oil sight glass on my old 250 was as filthy as...until I dropped it and took the cover off, rubbed it back, resprayed with engine enamel and gave the glass a good clean while I was at it.
I swear it was part of the reason I got a good trade on it...they could see it had clean oil and had been looked after. By me at least

Mick, is it accessible from the rear, it looks like there is some type of slot involved. No tricks removing the clutch cover? New gasket? Silicone sealant? I did take the bolts out of the clutch cover while the oil was out on the weekend, but the cover didn't want to come out and I didn't want to force the issue in case I screwed the gasket.
I've checked the Kawaski manuals, but they aren't very forthcoming in regards to removing/replacing/cleaning the sight glass, just show where it fits, not how it stays in there. Is it screwed in from the back or front?

...in with the oil?

Hi all,
A happy ending for once...and it's been a while since I originally posted this way back in August.
Since then the mornings are a bit warmer and she's been ridden a bit more, even more since my parents went off to NZud on holiday...leaving me to pick the kids up from school three times a week. I've also taken to standing her upright at night, which is probably illogical, but I'm comfortable with it
Anyway, the creamy cappuccino-froth coloured discolouration has gone, and the sight-glass looks brand-new and almost like it would have done when the mighty ZZR was first ridden out of the Big K dealership back in '98.
So, no panic required - this time. Phewwww!
Thanks to everyone who offered advice, muchly appreciated.
