had 2 sellers like this recently...
one was such a smartarse, after 5 days of saying cannot send items as money NOT received , he bounced/refused the Paypal payment and then
he sent me a message from ' paypalnotaccepted@yahoo.com' saying he would ONLY accept direct deposit or cash on pick up (me in Vic and him in Bris...yeah right)
and if I did not like it...stiff

I reported the carnt and 5 days after I did, I got a message from ebay saying he was in contravention of eBay listing rules, after contact from them had told eBay
he would not accept Paypal and eBay were sorry they could not force the seller to comply.
And they had also closed his account :kuda:

sellers have to include Paypal as a payment option, no choice in that.

But in the body of the ad - which Ebay does not control - sellers can always state that they don't accept PayPal payments and only accept payment on pick-up or direct deposit. You have to read the whole ad in full. Heaps of sellers do this.

Always best to contact the seller anyway and confirm which payment method they prefer. I always contact about postage as well, as some sellers just stuff this up every time.

Russ - that screenshot suggests to me that postage is free, but if they have specified somewhere else in the body of the ad that postage charges are applicable - then you gotta stump up mate. The seller had not contravened ebay rules if they have specified postage charges *somewhere* even if they indicate free postage as part of the payment options ( postage charges are meant to be specified here but heaps of sellers just don't know what the postage charges will be - so they select 'free' as the default and then specify that postage charges will apply depending on the location of the succesful bidder).

Postage charges also shit me no end - esepcially now from the US !! WTF is going on there ?? A full Kerker system for the Pearl was only about $180 posted this time last year - now, it is almost $600 to post the same item ???? farken bullshit.....

I would be questioning that one Gos ! A bloke sent me 2 silencers in 1 parcel and the headers in another and cost me $200.00 all up,maybe ask him to split the system into 2 parcels should work out cheaper because it will drop the parcel weight and the cost

tried that mate - they wouldn't ship in 2 boxes. I have noticed the same thing on heaps of ebay sellers in the US - postage costs to Oz seem to have tripled in the last 12 months for bulky stuff. Not so bad for small stuff - but even then, a small box about the size of say 2 shoeboxes - weighing less than 3kg - is still around $60US to post..... :x its just bullshit.

Well after 2-3 weeks of dicking around it finally came to a head today .....................

I caved and paid the $15 postage charge.

However I made sure she knew I wasnt happy that she called me a liar about the no postage charge mystery which she claimed that "it does not say at all". Anyways no less than 10mins later I get a return email telling me to jam it and she was going to return my money. She found me very offensive and some how I offended her with my rudeness

Sooooooooo if your not already bored I am going to post up our email entire communication and you can tell me if I was out of line. Some customer service issues over there at Brighton Kawa me quietly thinks.

Offer made for $50 carbon tank pad. $409 including shipping. Offer accepted then...............

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

Hi, I can't seem to pay for the zx10r tank guard as you haven't specified shipping method. Please put it all together with the 06 zx10r crash knobs and I will take them both.

Cheers

- russellhafey

Dear russellhafey,

Hi from my end it looks like you can pay for the tank protector, as I've specified that the freight is $0. I am not willing to sell you the crash knobs for that price as a number of people are watching the item and there is 1 bid.

Thanks
Jessica

- brightonkawasaki12

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

Hi,

I have attempted to pay for this several times today in several different ways. Is there another way we can get this sorted?

- russellhafey

Dear russellhafey,

This is very strange. Pay into my bank please

I know won another item from them. crash knobs for 102.50 which stated free postage. Please see ad on first page for reminder.

Dear russellhafey,

Hey mate, I can Post crash knobbs for $15 and will put the tank protector in as
Well
So $45, plus $15 plus price of crash knobbs. Once payment is in I'll ship :) thanks

- brightonkawasaki12

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

Perhaps you could offer a phone number to talk through this payment and cost.

Once again I can not pay for the crash knobs a a shipment method is not specified at your end.

Cheers

- russellhafey

Dear russellhafey,

The iPhone and iPads always
Specify free shipping for some reason in the adds but in the postage section of the add it specifies that postage will be calculated on buyer's location. The crash knobs are heavy and quite large so postage is $20 as have to be packed so not broken.

Please pay all together for tank protector, crash knobs and postage for crash knobs into my bank
Name: Jessica Andrews
Bsb: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Acc no: XXXXXXXXXXX
Once payment is in I will post to you.
Thanks,
Jessica

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

Sorry for the delay, I needed some time to think about this and do my research. So as I see it. I made an offer of $40 including shipping for the tank guard. You accepted. Then you tried to tach in an extra $5.
I then made an offer for the 2 together. You rejected it which was fair enough.
Based on the add the clearly states free shipping. You then turn around and try and charge me $15 for shipping. Once I cleared up the matter of $5 shipping for the tank guard you return with a new shipping cost of $20 for the crash knobs.Coincidently the same amount you had to forfeit on the tank guard. When questioned you have stated it is an error on my end and with iPhones in general but no one let alone eBay confirms this. Quiet possibly you stuffed up the add as I clearly can not pay for either item through the tradition means.
The shipping costs were advertised for free and should be honored as per eBay and retail practices. You can give me a call to discuss if you like 0427084117.

- russellhafey

Dear russellhafey,

Ok sorry I've made mistake in the prices of the tank protector
Tank protector $40 with free shipping
crash knobs $102.50 and postage on crash knobs is $15
So please pay ASAP and I will post.
Spoken with eBay and the add definitely does not specify free shipping.
Thanks

- brightonkawasaki12

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

Monies have been paid.
It Definitely DOES say free postage. See in the forum for my pic of the advert YOU set up. Not my mistake
http://www.ksrc-au.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=40538
I would have been more happy if you just admitted to a mistake. Instead you have tried to claim it is my error. Great customer service.

I will be sure to let everyone know. I am sure the delivery will be just as smooth

- russellhafey

Dear russellhafey,

Thanks to your rudeness I am not going to refund you your money and you can find the products elsewhere.
Give me your bank details.

- brightonkawasaki12

Dear russellhafey,

Sorry that read wrong. I am going to refund you the money. You cannot be so rude and demanding and make threats and then expect me to send you these two items. I wish you luck finding them for the price I was offering. Give me your bank details I want nothing more to do with you.

- brightonkawasaki12

Dear brightonkawasaki12,

My rudeness? Your kidding right. I offered a phone number to clear this up a week ago. Instead you stood your ground and called me a liar. This is after you tried to rip me off several times in several different way.

You rude prick...

Damned if you do and damned if you don't...hate these types of sellers. As you say very poor customer service.

I've been trapped a few time when seller puts up an estimate of postage and I have paid that and when I get the item the postage is only half what they estimated. :x

I think he should have made the phone call as soon as you gave your number to them. Just the fact that it was a shit fight to get it sorted is enough for me to avoid dealing with them.

I don't sell very often and it's been a pain with some buyers not reading the item description where I clearly state "Don't use PayPal, postage at your cost".

I don't take everything to the post office to see how much to post it until after the item sells, some in the past I have said local pick up only, this time I chose free freight, and put what I did in the description. Seems the new generation of smart phone eBayers don't think they should have to read the description and I had one guy saying he was going to force me to post something free, it ended up going on a second chance offer to someone happy to pay postage as I had described.

I'm a very occasional eBay seller and it's more hassle than it's worth.

If the mob in the OP was a big time operator then they should know better.

You're doing it wrong!

Mark it as pick up only, then put in your ad that you will post at buyers expense.

If I go to a servo that has 2 mars bars for $1 and I pick them up, then checkout says, sorry that's finished. I have right to say get fucked here's ya dollar I'm outta here.
True story.

If your ad's cover page says free postage. It's free postage.

Thats absolutly true Wattie, wife bought a item that said so much but the scanner said it was more but as the girl said we have to sell it for what the tag indicated because thats what was advertised and at the end of the day it sounds like Brighton Kawasaki thought the item would have sold for more and when it didnt they have tried to recover some of their loss by charging postage.

I bought a radiator a few weeks ago. The search results put free post at the top. The add said free postage. The payments and postage page said free.
A week later I got a message demanding another $35 for surcharge to Tassie. I went back and read the add again, and sure enough ... down the bottom of the page after a video ... was the surcharge. I hadn't seen it the first time because I had several tabs open to compare. After scrolling 5 or 6 pages and finding them all the same I didn't scroll past the video. Just stuck a couple on my watch list to choose one later.
The seller said if I wasn't happy they would refund no questions, so I politely pointed out that I felt tricked and wanted my money back. After another week I asked when I would get my refund and they offered a phone number to call and they would "sort the problem". My response to that was; There is no problem. You refund my money and I don't leave neg feedback. It was refunded in a couple of hours, but it shouldn't have taken 2 weeks to get to that. Then I bought an overpriced one locally.

Ebay is driving the free post listings. The cynic in me figures that ebay only gets a cut of the sell price. Now that sellers are 'incentivised" to offer free post they add it into the price - and ebay gets a cut of the lot. ;)

^^^^ this.

Free postage on the cover page does not mean free postage at all. Its all in the fine print. Ebay do push sellers to advertise that postage is free - most times the 'shipping' costs need to be sorted out depending on the buyers location. It has always been thus.

Some arsehole sellers - as Laidback has mentioned - quote a ridiculous amount for postage especially if the winning bid is way lower than what they expected ( this seems to have been reflected a bit in Russ being ripped off as well - the seller admits as much in one of her email replies...) - so the seller looks to make up the difference by overcharging on the postage.

This is *exactly* why I no longer deal with those dickheads from Show'N'Go in Adelaide. They wanted $40 postage for a plastic headlight bucket for the ZX1100A1 !! I actually took one down to the local post office to get a quote to post it to Adelaide - $13.50 including the packaging !!!

But the onus is always on the buyer to check EVERYTHING in the ad. Email the seller if there is any doubt. Report them to Ebay if they fuck you around - I have done this a few times as well.....but sellers can and do add shipping costs somewhere in the body of the ad despite having 'free' on the cover page.
