If you're going to buy a mig, buy a gas/gassless inverter. If the machine is around 200 amp and can run gas, you have the option of running stainless and aluminium wire. The inverter transformer give you unlimited stepless control of you amperage and wire speed. With a 15amp plug, it can run off most household power supplies.

You can pick up an excellent one of these for around $2k.

With the auto darkening helmet, make sure you get a variable shade. Needs to be shade 12 or 13 for HF aluminium tig welding.

Let me know if you get stuck.

A good as your offer sounds... no thanks, I think I'll keep my spare alloy tank & return it to standardish configuration to suit my needs.

Also.. advice here is correct that my initial belief that the tanks were made from a 6000 alloy series isn't the case. More likely a 3000 or 5000 series as has been suggested. Talking to some of the guys at work with experience welding alloys seems to indicate that the filler rod material/patching material isn't that critical as long as it is a weldable alloy?

Will know more soon?!

OK - what the cook got me a couple of years ago for Xmas - was a Weldmate T100P. 100A max, made in Italy - pretty easy to drag around, uses flux-cored wire. Piece of piss to use, you should be able to pick one of these up for a couple of hundred bucks. Its only a small unit but does pack a reasonable punch for its size.

The helmet is a UniMig XA1001F(G) - variable shade. Cool lookin' lid ! :D - these are about $130 a pop.
