fezzick wrote:The last bike race meeting at Bathurst was the Easter Carnival in 2000. Kevin Curtin cleaned up the main races and a sidecar team from WA won most of the sidecar races. I was head of the commentary team and it was a great meeting. Unfortunately, it cost the promoter his house and his business and all his money when a well-known Sydney TV station who had promised money and live coverage, welched on the deal at the last minute. The event WAS taped, but, due to contractual disputes on-going, the vision has never been released.

:) that's a shame because we all know how great it is watching the v8 s up there would have been good watching the bikes too.

I was there in 85, easter meeting, they had a big riot that year, they stopped for a few years after that.
Not sure what year they came back, but when they did, 3 guys were killed on conrad straight, sidecar guys.
Think they stopped them again after that year, but i couldnt say what year exactly.
The year the sidecar guys was killed was 94, happened at Macphillamy Park not Conrod, I was there and it all happened right in front of me. They had races at Bathurst in 93 as well, one of my mates (Bladeboy for those of you that know him) actually finised in 3rd place, ahead of some guy called Andrew Stround on some home built Kiwi machine  ;) He's got a photo of him crossing the line and Stroud on the back wheel trying to chase him down.

As Fezzick said, 2000 was the last. Phil, you'll remember that guy on the Honda VF that raced the whole race wrestling that pig across the top of the mountain.......well he got a standing ovation from the crowd up there when the race finished - what an iron man.

damn right they had a big riot that year - I was 88th of 95 arrested ! 2nd-last punter on the Saturday night to get thrown in the bullwagon for the *exciting* trip in reverse direction to Bathurst Jail. The wallopers did a walk-through of the campsites on the Sunday morning and arrested another 7 alleged rioters. Have lots of memories of the Easter races, our crew were regulars from 1980 through to 85.

The 1985 meeting was a fantastic weekend of racing - this was the 2nd meeting where Rodger Freeth won the Arai 500 Endurance event on the Macintosh gixxer 1100. He was incredible to watch - just so smooth and flowing over the mountain, whereas the rest of the pack looked entirely manic and out of control....

Thanks for the video Dave - its a corker ! How dusty was the track though.... :?

A group of us did the Easter meeting in 2000, it was also a ripper. As Phil has pointed out, this was the last time the bikes raced at Bathurst - and Kev Curtain was regularly pulling 1-metre high monos over the first hump !..... interesting tidbit for Robracer - Roger Quinlan raced his old MkII at this meeting ! I remember watching him come through Reid Park with a big pack all looking to get past ;)

I am pretty sure that a lot of my photos of the Easter races have already been posted in other threads about Bathurst.....

Funny thing that, couple of weeks before easter, a mates new girlfriend's uncle told her not to go as there was going to be riot's, he was a member of the TRG, not going to post what he told us, as peep;s here dont think i like them :) but something about them needing training,
On the sat arvo, they started to arrive in busses, think they said there were 600 of them, we counted about 6/7 coaches, and another one full of riot gear, and yer gos, it was a ripper, and no i was just a bystander!!! on the mound. they had 3 flanks, with a couple of hundred in each flank.
And they had the rags on next morm, taking the girlfriend to the dunny(if u could find one that was still standing, as they tore them down to use the bricks for missiles) they into me, ranting and raving on, and i was just sitting on my bike waiting for her to come out.
So im betting u got some grief gos, when they got u down the station??

Was there in 84 for the james hardie 1,000, no riot police, no bus load of TRG!!!!

 fuck yeah. They were taking us out of the bullwagon one at a time - there were maybe 6 or 7 of us in the back. As each one was taken out, they were led to the cells along a corridor - lined with TRG assholes who belted the shit out of every poor bastard along the way ! I was the last one out, and only copped a couple of smacks to the head and a few good punches in the guts - was pretty winded when I hit the cells. Some of the guys were smacked in the head pretty hard, there was a lot of claret on the floor..... :? 88 of us in the Bathurst Jail cells - all 3 of them !! I ended up sleeping in the *yard* as the cells were already chockas by the time our last group was thrown in there......it was an open (barred) ceiling - in Bathurst - in Easter. Yes it was a cold night !!

I know for a fact, that the TRG actually had to raffle off positions for the 1985 races, due to the incredible demand from TRG members ( and all the others) who wanted a piece of the action with the bikies. There were over 1000 applications for a spot, but as you say only about 600 on the Mountain over the weekend.

One poor bastard on the Mountain on Saturday night - had ridden from Adelaide - and set up his campsite fairly close to the toilet block near the compound - he had been there less than 1 hour, and was just sitting at his fire knocking up a billy of tea - when on one of the first crowd *rushes* - the TRG just bowled him over and dragged him into the compound !!! He hadn't done anything at all except make his camp in the wrong spot.......poor bugger.

I got bailed on the Sunday morning - after making a call to Mum & Dads place about 0800 hrs and saying - "Happy Easter - can you send $500 to Bathurst Police Station to bail me out ?? "  Mum was mortified.

I could write a book on the shit we used to get up to at the races. Here are a couple of photos of the boys at Bathurst over a couple of years....

Hilton on the Hill - that is the Black Pearl on the left. We went everywhere together

Tits out backwards up at Macphillamy Park....

The infamous 'Dunny Burnout' I did on the Pearl. This was in 1982. Smoke billowed out of that dunny block for 20 minutes ....

That is me on the left on the Pearl, and Ross on his z650 (820 kit) on the right. A bit of roost behind us ;) - 1983 or 84 ?

Sitting up on the scaffolding 1983

The boys - 1982. Black Pearl on the right.

On the road to Bathurst - I think this was the 1984 gig.

This is from the 1985 gig. Before the riots.....and yes punters, that is PC on the right - when he had hair !!!

I was a flag Marshall when they ran the bikes in conjunction with 12 hour. They were dead set mad f..kers across the top of the mountain. Bikers came for bikes and generally pissed off Saturday night, or at least weren't found near the fence on Sunday. Can't say much good about what I saw on the non racing side of the fence, but would love to see them back again on the track. As flaggie I really enjoyed the mix of bikes and cars, got to appreciate what you had no idea about.

Unfortunately highly unlikely we will see them on the full circuit anytime soon, too many plagues to fallen riders. As a flaggie our hats were rarely on as a mark of respect to those in both cars and bikes who had been killed.

If you ever get up there check out the old vale circuit, mad nutters on rigids and dirt roads. There is a thought a day ride that takes in some motorcycling history - goulburn to bathurst. Gouburn held the first "official" Australian tourist trophy, it was 3 laps around Goulburn to near Marulan, from the plague they averaged 80km/h with 3 stops and a couple of river crossings.

So many places of interest, history and great places to ride.
