And Jase, fair go, they have already reduced the speed limits to 50 in most places in Sydney, so, you suggest we should drive around a 40 everywhere........ sounds like a bit of a joke to me I mean, thats a safe speed in a school zone - but EVERYWHERE

I normally drive well under the speed limit, that way it's other people getting annoyed with me and not me getting annoyed with other people.

I actually cannot understand this fascination we have with driving at the speed limit. They make the limit 60, why do people feel the need to have to sit on 60? Do people plan every trip they take with such precision that they have to sit exactly on the speed limit to make it to their life threatening appointment on time?

Because once upon a time we were allowed to choose a speed that suited the conditions. We went fast where we could and slowed when we needed to. Now we have an arbitrary and artificial limit which is actually closer to the lower end. How many roads are there where you can't travel the entire distance with the cruise control set at the speed limit? So we want to use the whole 'allowance'. Its a restriction, not a limit. And if it wasn't such a giant cash cow for the grubbyment we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

I dont intentionally piss other people off. I drive at a speed I feel comfortable diving at that just happens to be below the limit. The speedo in my car is out by about 7km/h at 60. Knowing this, I sit on 60 in a 60 zone knowing I will be safe from the prying lens of a speed camera. If other drivers are annoyed at having to sit 7km/h under the speed limit, then stiff shit. I will not be pressured by anyone to travel at a faster speed because they are in a hurry!

Common bloody courtesy is allowing all drivers to drive in a manner they consider safe, provided they do it in a lawful manner. This means being considerate of drivers traveling at or below the speed limit. I dont think it's acceptable to expect slower drivers on single lane roads to pull over and let other drivers pass.

The speed limit is just that, a limit. I dont think I've ever heard anyone refer to it as a "speed you must drive at", or a "minimum speed".

And Dave, I dont sit in the right hand lane blocking other people if I'm not overtaking. Traffic management is for the on duty police.

And for those that think I must be a shit driver or incapable of holding a license. I suspect I've done more rider and driver training than most people here. I just consider I put myself in enough danger when I'm driving/riding at work, that I then choose to minimize it when I'm not at work. Regardless of how anyone else feels about that, it's my choice.

No, it didn't surprise me, and I have no problem with you wanting to drive like a nanna. But when I come up behind nannas on my bike and the road is clear I'd like to be able to overtake in a safe manner without having to keep one eye on the speedo and the other in the bushes in case I go that 1 kilometre over the limit.

We've had this "Safer Speeds Demonstration" in two municipalities of Tassie for quite some time now and there are moves afoot to make it statewide. So the gravel road that I currently use for a shortcut and on which my heavy road bike can safely do the current 100kmh limit, will be reduced to 80. Does this mean it will be unsafe to do 81?
It seems that driving/riding safely has taken a back seat to driving/riding in a government controlled manner. And the government is controlled by money.

If speeding was such a safety issue and not a cash cow, a simple scheme would be implimented to ensure vehicles could not speed. It would be quite simple; every speed sign would be fitted with a transponder, and all new vehicles must be fitted with a cruise control that takes it's upper limit from the transponders. Within a few years there would be no speeding. Most of the cost would be the brunt of the car manufacturers.

However, the grubbyment would lose millions and I very much doubt the road toll would be seriously affected (personal opinion not fact). And this why such a simple scheme has not been employed.

This is actually what I do. Drive 5kph below speed limit. Of course this pisses ppl off, and bit of a problem with my previously small car.

Now I drive a massive 4wd with huge and visible LPG tank at the back and no problems at all with tailgaters

It's a good feeling to have 0 (zero) speeding tickets. Mountains are where the 10,000rpm belong, not towns.
