Amazingly i knew what you were talking about, but i ain't paying $50+ for one that i'll use once every 18 months, I have an outside micrometer that hasn't gone outside it's box in 8 months or so. i've got more of a chance to use high accuracy verniers in the whole day-to-day thing.

yes they are handy for a rough and quick measure for +0.05 or -0.05 and even that is dubious and probaly at best 0.1, certainly not accurate at all and you cant measure oval bores easily or or at least all the way through to see how much machining you need to clean them up to match pistons or just rings

In fact you can measure almost as accuratly with a shifter

Yeah, inside mic's can cost way more than that, I kinda am hinting at borrowing a set when required, even taking the barrels to an engineering joint and flip them a redback to do a quick measure

Not only that they need calibrating often and temperature and "feel" plays a big part in their accuracy.

Ok, have been procrastinating the repair as it had become a royal pain in the arse, finally had a crack at it this afternoon and i'm pretty sure it's been fixed. It looks like it was simply a leak on the hose on the fuel tank vacuum switch . I've given it a good going over and replaced a few other things as well like a newer float needle/seat (the previous one was less than fantastic ) intake manifold o-ring (absolutely shagged).

This is all on top of relapping the valves and putting in a new barrel.

Just had a read of your thread, did not exactly know what you were talking about for the most part, but understood more then i thought i would, very informative very appreciative. If you need to borrow a set of 150mm, digital verniers within 0.01 i have a set in the boot of my car just hit me up and if im in the area il drop them off. However inside mic, or your t gauges are probably pretty useful i might be able to borrow a set from work if your interested.

The headaches continue . I have ordered in a new vacuum switch for the fuel petcock and if cleaning up the vacuum test ports & putting in a new screw & washer doesn't work, I am going to order in a pair of NEW intake boots so that EVERYTHING on the intake side of the head has been replaced.

Once this pain in the intake department fucks off, hopefully i will be able to work on the problem with the top end. I've got a strobelight and sufficient enthusiasm to use it. In the meantime i need to finish putting the RF900 back together after replacing the clutch plates, pesky plastics.

p.s. Tilly thanks again about the calipers, i picked up a pair that does 0.01 (specs say 0.02 accuracy though) from Aldi of all places. Now that i've got it, i have a feeling it's goig to be a while before i need to actually use something like this again, murphy and his bloody laws.
