i actually have a pillion belt thing if you want it.

I bought it for the Mrs, and she never went on the back of the ZX10 after the 1st go. so it went in the cupboard.

I'll try and find it.

I have told both mine from the start to hang onto the bike - not me - and to lean with the bike...... - I had to tell Kasey to stop leaning more than me

Riding smooth is a given ;)

Dave I had my son on the back plenty of times but that was 12 years ago, when he started falling asleep on the back I pulled the pin, in the end I set up an intercom to talk to him to keep him awake but it was a distraction for me so I gave up. A few years later a friend died riding as a pillion & that's when I decided never again...... I don't want to have the responsibility if something were to happen I don't know if I could handle it :?
Prior to my son being old enough I had pillioned girlfriends, friends & wife #1 without a thought so it was a pretty big shock to the system to pull the pin for good but I thought long & hard about it.
Oh & my son was 6 when he first started riding on the back...... he could not even touch the rear pegs.

Having taking my pregnant wife and my nephew and a few friends on the back I can't really talk about pre teens but can say a couple of things that worked for me.

1) Pillion should be comfortable, work out a position that is comfortable for them without impeding on you, I found a grippy seat cover and not holding on to my shoulders worked well. If they have to move work out a signal (tap on the shoulder) that they want to re position themselves so you can stop and prepare. I can tell you the first time my wife did at the lights we nearly overbalanced as I had only one foot down and one on the brake pedal.

2) I am not so keen on leaning with the bike idea in that it forces them to believe they have to "lean". What I found works best for me with beginners is to simply tell them to look where they want to go. Your head will determine where your body goes thus if you are looking through the corner you will naturally lean in with your head. I found this worked really well with adults as they were now working with me and the bike as one.

My son is only 4 and has already been on the bike around the driveway, I think it will be a long 4 years prior to him getting on the back.
Get out have fun and enjoy.

Nick
