A mate of mine had a 99 model ZX6, he bought it new. When the LAMS scheme came into Vic. he got a letter from Vic Roads telling him that his bike was eligible for LAMS use
He queried it by calling his local Vic Roads & they said if you've got a letter then it's kosher.
About 6 months ago another mates girlfriend wanted to get into riding & asked me for recommendations on a decent LAMS bike, I'm a big fan of the SV 650s (I've ridden a mates one a fair bit, my ex had one & loved it & they're really easy to ride) so I suggested taking one of them for a test ride.
She said it scared her a bit because it was pretty punchy in the first couple of gears (fair enough) so while thinking of alternatives I remembered Timbo's ZX6 was LAMS approved, long story short she wrote letters to Vic Roads & quoted them engine & frame No's, power output, etc & they sent her a letter with all the bikes details stating that it was 100% LAMS OK so she bought it.
I know it's bizzare because we all know the power to weight of the 6 puts it well outside the allowable limit but she's riding it around fully registered, insured & with copies of the original letter & the one she got from V.R. under the seat, it's even got LAMS on the rego sticker!
The moral of the story is that I'm sure Timbo wasn't the only owner of a 99 ZX6 that got one of these letters, call up a few that are for sale & ask them weather they got a letter a couple of years back, if they did & they still have it, you're in business.

I heard there are 2 types, the standard SV & a restricted Lams approved version

Yep, spot on Rob.
The SV comes restricted for LAMS & when you've done your time, you uncork it & all those missing ponies come stampeding out.
Only on the 08/09 models though, earlier ones don't have the LAMS option (they can be made LAMS legal but you need an engineers report, power test, weighbridge certificate, etc after you've restricted it somehow.)

I rode a ZX7R for the most part of my P's in NSW, so I'm not going to give you as harsh a response as some. At the time I lived there it was only a fine if you were caught, but as others have said, insurance is no doubt an issue. As it was I was taken out by a cage driver and was still able to claim off the CTP, the police ignored the licence issue due to the fact I was doing nothing wrong and had been injured quite badly.

Your choice but there are risks involved.

If the OP recently got their license and is subject to the recently introduced 3 year provisionals thing, i can understand but not condone the curiosity about riding an out-of-class bike while on his/her p's. May i suggest the OP also learn to be patient, or if insistant on buying the bike, get used to spending an obscene quantity of dosh on trackdays to get their money's worth.

I was tempted by a bigger bike, and i had found one i wanted months before i was elegible to ride. I decided to wait it out as the whole no insurance thing didn't appeal whatsoever (having previously been involved in a 4 car pileup and the ONLY person with insurance, the twit that hit us all was dui, no one else had coverage at all made me seriously reconsider the idea of doing it) and i was lucky that the bike i was after was STILL for sale. I'm glad i waited, never regretted it.

If you ride on your own without insurance and out of class and have an accident involving no one else , IT'S YOUR PROBLEM!

If you ride with a group and have an accident involving other riders it becomes EVERY BODIES PROBLEM!!! I would defo' not like to be you if the latter were to happen

Is it definite that there is no insurance? As I understand it you don't have to be licenced to own a registered bike thus you don't have to be licenced to insure the bike and insurance isn't void by non licence riders taking it out for a spin the last time I checked. May need to read the terms and conditions again.

Hey Hugo. I know how you're feeling. I won't be criticising your intentions, as I also like some others, went straight to a big bike as soon as I had my P's. Matter of fact, I rode from the licence test, straight to the dealer and traded my stroker 250 on a four stroke 750 four, an hour later!!!!
But...and it's a big butt...........times were different then. This was in the days when the plod would let you off for .06-.08 and ask you to slow down and take it easy on the way home. The days when police might actually just issue a warning if you were a decent bloke. These days, the laws and law enforcement has lost the ability to use their own discretion. So, if you do decide to go down that path, just make sure you are well informed as to the consequences if it should all go pear shaped at some point!!

Without looking it up I would say that it would be a huge loophole for the insurance company to use to avoid a payout.

It's pretty standard for the insurance to be voided if you're not licenced for that bike. For example:
