Re: Chains and Sprockets
the gearing is independent of the pitch of the chain - those numbers (520, 525 etc) actually refer to the pitch of the chain - its physical size and dimensions. Chain pitch is the distance between any three consective rivets divided by two. All chain sizes are expressed in the *imperial* system - ie any chain starting with a '5' has a 5/8 pitch (approx 16mm). The second and 3rd digits refer to the width of the rollers. Big old chains on hairy-chested air-cooled 4's were a *huge* 630 pitchBikerBoy wrote:.....If I get the "quick acceleration' being 14 / 50 does the chain become a 520? or stay 525? (i've no idea what that number refers to anyway).....

Re: Chains and Sprockets
i found rear 520 chain got eaten up real quick by my cbr.... considering a 520 isnt as strong as a 530...
also one tooth on the front is like nearly 3 on the back... so going up 2 on the back isnt bad, but i go down one on the front....
thats just my 2c worth...

Yea Website i'm buying from reckons that they'd done a lot of dyno work and R&D
and found the perfect sprocket set up to be down 1 on front + up 2 on back, so i guess its like going down to a 13 tooth front with so much pressure applying to the 520 chain.
14/40 looks like a standard 'quick acceleration' setup so 14/42 - should give the bike much more torque and acceleration down low (which is always welcome on a inline 4 in the city)

Re: Chains and Sprockets
Check ebay store 'onlinebikeshop'. seller 'dirtbiker blacktown'
item 150150700019
Selling RK quality chain and JT sprocket sets..your choice of o or x ring , plain or gold chain.Just brought a set for the ol GPZ.. good gear , reasonable price.
IMO I prefer a stock or +1 tooth front and change ratio with rear.. Is the dearer way to play with ratios but I feel it tends to suck less hp when the chain is driven by a larger front and seems to last longer.
Alloy rears seem to wear ok as long as you keep that chain at the right tension and keep it lubed..Fail to do either and it'll chew out real quick.
Preferance on chain lube anyone? (mine Belray gel)

Re: Chains and Sprockets
Chain lube - I have been using Motorex 'Racing' chain lube for a while. It goes on white, and stays white for a while.....when the colour has gone, its time to re-lube. Every 2-3 weeks is the norm for a re-lube.
The OEM chain on the MFP12 has now done almost 35k, and is still in great condition. I reckon I can squeeze 50k out of it, and that will be between 3 and 4 years of riding ( some of which has been done with a wicked demenour

Re: Chains and Sprockets
Hey there
Go the vortex chain and sprocket kit. i bought the same one through the same shop. great people. I had a 15 tooth front 40 tooth back and now 14 front 42 back and loving it. now she gets up first gear under power(power wheelie) and im playing with it all the way through 2nd. im going to try sitting right back and popping it in third i recon it will come up. still getting useto the differance in power although.
I rang the shop for a price on installing it, they said $70 an hour, I said @*#@%$ $70 #@$% dollars. then i asked how much for a chain breaker, they said $20 i said sold.
2 hours latter i was riding around looking like a grease monkey whith a big smile on me dial.
You cant go wrong. it took about a week to get here but worth the wait. Here is a pic
Cheers
