Now to answer questions:
It's highly arguable that he was at fault, since he didn't check before moving out and didn't indicate, but the circumstances are a bit murky. The 'lane' I was in is not actually a marked lane, but a road that is wide enough for two cars and is used as two lanes as there is usually a queue of right-turners. If it was a marked lane, it would be clearly his fault, since it isn't - not so clear. And there was one gung-ho witness who made it very clear that they thought I was at fault and was loudly offering themself up if the driver needed a witness, giving me dirty looks. There was no damage to his car - the car only hit me, not the bike, so no problems there.

The damage is minimal enough that I think it's better to pay out of my own pocket, rather than a long drawn-out, disputed process that isn't very likely to end in success and that will hurt my insurance premiums anyway.

TurBIce - it happened on Tuesday morning, on my way to work. I sat on the side of the road for 10 minutes afterwards, then continued riding to work. The damage is very minor and cosmetic only.

Thanks for all the well wishes. In some small way, it's kind of a relief. The longer I've been riding, and the more confident and faster I get, there's been a little voice in the back of my head saying "You've gotta have your first off at some point... it's going to be a big one at this rate". Now I've got it out of the way and can get on with it. I've always been a little superstitious about the 'never had an off' thing (on horses and bikes), so am pleased it's all over and was a small one.

well firstly glad your doing ok & minimal harm to you & the bike. Secondly i am guessing you were in a reasonably quiet area, or were turning out of a small road as your "lane" wasnt devided officially, i always thought ot was acceptable to go up the left to turn left if people on the right were turning right or going straight through (if they were turning left too, THEN it'd just be plain rude to do what you did).

Lastly that witness sounds like an absolute nugget, what shard of info could they give had it come to insurance that would change the way things panned out. i.e. The 'victim' was in theright lane, demonic bike rider (i swear i saw a pitchfork in her tankbag!) came screaming up on the left hand side with the rear wheel in the air and RAN INTO the bike as it was already cutting left. I mean ffs yould have to do the maths on where you were and the bike and yadda yadda yadda smack-witness-in-the-face-with-a-handfull-of-nails yadda.

At least on the bright side, by ksrc standards it was a minor one

Sadly people think exactly this kind of thing. An 18 year old died recently in Canberra when a car pulled out in front his R1. Today's paper had a letter from someone with the usual "What was a p-plater doing riding that sort of bike, must've been speeding or riding dangerously, need more rider training etc etc", even though there have been no indications that he was a p-plater or was speeding, and of course he would've done the compulsory training that all riders have to do but no car drivers do...idiots
