All opinions welcome guys, I'm not married to the thing after all.

Well it's like this: the family skill base is pretty comprehensive - my father used to rebuild carby's for a living, and is a machinist/fitter by trade, and worked in automotive industry for around 15-20 years, among other things.

So we can deal with nearly anything mechanical, and he is pretty much retired so I can give him little projects here and there... :wink: So cost of repairing should be sans~labour...

Work is about 1.5 k's away and we live in the CBD (ok that's a stretch calling t'ba's CBD a CBD, but y'know...) so I don't know that performance would really matter all that much. But getting some performance out of it sounds like a challenge...

There was actually a Z250 on ebay a while ago - went for $1200-$1400 I think on road, reg the lot...

Anyhow, just thinking at this stage...if my brother buys a new bike next year I will probably be buying his...and thus have the ER-5 left over. I guess any decision would really have to take into account what the ER would be worth, as ideally I would like to liberate the value of it if I buy my brothers bike...if it isn't worth much then I might as well keep it...

Heres straight from the horses mouth.
I had one in 1978, brand new, traded in a CD175 for it. Good plodder but wouldn't pull the socks off a dead man. As a commuter it would be ok if you didn't have to go more than 100 kmh and even then its a leisurely romp to get there. For $700, if its in good nick it'll be cheap transport but nothing more. Sold it to get a CB 500 Four (great bike!!!).
My wife had a Z250C in the mid 80s that had ever so slightly more power. I actually enjoyed riding it for a giggle (I had one of the first Gixxa 750s then). Taught you how to get around without much power, going for gaps and not breaking unless you had to. Urs got her licence on it and promptly gave up riding.

My father had a z250 back in the early 80s and reckons it was the most reliable vehicle he's ever owned. I'm sorta wondering what that says about his choice of vehicles and if it's hereditary! Worrying thought ...

I wouldn't ride one on road unless I had to. Or I knew there was no traffic. Although postie bikes would probably feel pretty similar.

Ok, so I've gone distinctly cold on the Z200 - too many negatives for my liking...no roadworthy, no rego, higher than average price, quite old, no power, etc...

So anyhow I found something that fits the bill nicely. A '91 GN250 with 13000km on it for $2.6k...reg till Apr '05, RWC and bunch of new stuff, chain, sprockets, brakes etc. This seems a better proposition to me.

Opinions please...

Disregarding brand loyalty its a much better proposition Felix, Think they are pretty bullet proof but wont do half the things an old Gpx250 will do for not much more the the 2.6 large asked for the gn. But HEAPS more workable then the ole Z200. Keep us posted mate.

Yeah, my feelings exactly...

I have thought of a GPX/ZZR but I don't think they'd suit her...I'd like one, 'cause I'm curious and reckon it'd be fun to flog one...but, y'know...

I reckon go for it. Theyre a nice, predictable, easy to live with, easy to learn on bike and wont cost a fortune if it gets dropped. (no fairings etc) Of course, the cheaper you can buy it for the better :wink:

A friend of my dad had a GN for a couple of years - and hes been riding for over 50 years - and he travelled everywhere on it. And I mean everywhere. A day trip from the central coast to Eden and back was to him like a trip up the old road is for us. He had no problem keeping up with the traffic and had well over 100000 ks on it when he traded it. Just keep the oil up to them. He since bought himself a W650 for his 70th birthday :D

a mate has a srv250, he's had too accidents and it only cost him $30 first time for new indicator and $26 second time for a foot peg. And a few minor scratches that he can live with from both accidents.

Yeah, I first saw a SRV250 in TW Your first bike article...but I just can't find one to buy...not in this state at least...

I saw go for it!!!!

They've got to be an easy bike to learn on if the local bike shop near my place hires then out by the day for learners to go out and do their P's test &/ get some practice on. Nice easy going bike too. Pretty low bugger so if she's height deficient it ought to be fine for her.

I imagine it'd go just as well as a mid-80's cb250.

Good luck, and yeah, sounds a much better proposition, at least you *KNOW* this one works (and that others have heard of it before ;-) )

But no, not height deficient, 5'10", so she *could* actually ride mine...theoretically...

Well playing around with a variety of ideas at the moment...may be giving up my day job, and perhaps doing something else...money might not be available quite yet...and am still waiting on an email from the guy...

But this sounds much more like what we want...I just want to avoid getting a cb250...not that I can knock 'em...but y'know, different and all that...
