Not if your float valves are OK, and it will help sort out where the problem might be.

Interestingly, I just bought one and it has the *exact* same problem. Won't idle without the choke, stalls as soon as you turn it off or if you reduce it then touch the throttle. Seems like a fuel issue? Haven't look at it yet.

yeahh .. Im guessing that the hose that guess to my vaccum valve is either not sitting properly(my noobness from not installing hoses properly when putting tank back on last sunday  ) or damaged... but I'm preety sure it's just a fuel issue... fingers crossed.. Im taking my tank off on sunday... so we will see then

hey mate i just totally rebuilt my zxr250c and turned it into a race bike i brought an engine and carbys fitted them n tried startin it n got th same problem as u have bike will only run on choke and as soon as u hit the throttle it sound like theres no fuel only air n kills the engine,,,,, correct?
this is how i found the problem and help some people gave me
is the air box and air filter on
if so drain fuel bowls to see if fuel is in every one of these these screws are on the bottom of the carby bowls
if all 4 bowls have fuel in them then your pilot jets are blocked remove carbys remove bowls and give a good clean if u have any other questions just ask :) peace
anyone can go fast in a straight line,,,,

Heys guys, you still having probs with idling? I just bought my first zx2 this week end. It was a pile of parts in a box. When i got it all together it wouldn't idle and blew shit loads of smoke.
There are four hoses under the tank that you need to get right if it won't idle.

One line comes off the front of the carbs, over the airbox and plugs into the back/top of the airbox.
There is the small vacume line that runs to the tap. disconnect it from the tap and try blowing ack down it to check its clear. If it not, clean it.
Another large hose comes up from behind/under carbies. This is the fuel line, and goes on the large out let of the tank.
Finally there is the breather hose that runs down and out the bottom of the fairing.
If all this is clear, then remover the tap from the tank and clear it out. The modern unleaded fuels are natorious for glogging the taps up when left sitting for a bit.

As for the smoke, it was as simple as making sure the crank case vent on top of the gear box sealed properly with rubber boot on the bottom of the airbox. It it's not, it will either suck oil out of the rocker cover breather or build up crank case perasure and hinder oil return to the sump and then get into inlet that way. Haven't figured out exactly which yet. But lots of smoke.

mine used to do that when it was cold, it would just turn straight off. I did do one thing once, start it rolling down on a hill so it is in momentum and in second gear and it didn't turn off as I rev'd it, then it worked just like normal, I think it just needed to get petrol running through it.
