As far as I remember, you pay back to the start of the month. You do have to sign a dec to say it hasn't been used if there is a gap.Gosling1 wrote:The biggest problem with the pommie system is how they back-date all rego costs if you have left the bike run out of rego !!![]()
From reading a few letters to the Editor of the pommie bike-mags I get, it would appear that you simply cannot let your bike run out of rego, say for a couple of months over winter ( and over there, its a good time to not be on the roads anyway) - the DoT (or equivalent), will actually fine you, and charge you a retrospective amount back to when the original rego expired !!! Its a joke, and actually forces people to keep their bikes registered when they aren;t using it ...its just a grab for cash.
Apart from that, the complexities of the entire system are *way* worse than NSW......
Nothing beats walking up to a counter, at any time up to (but not past) 12 months after rego has expired, and simply paying for new rego, 3, 6 or 12 months, whatever best suits you, without any inspections or tax or insurance issues. Its heaven on a stick.
Even after 12 months, its a simple matter to run your bike past an Authorised Inspector and get the inspection sheet ticked........

They tried to introduce that here a few years ago - it got squashed pretty quicklyphotomike666 wrote:....As far as I remember, you pay back to the start of the month. You do have to sign a dec to say it hasn't been used if there is a gap.

I get mags like Classic Mechanics and Classic Bike - its the older bikes that seem to be hit the worse. If you intend to keep a bike regoe'd all year round, its no problem. It becomes a problem when owners want a short break (3-6 months).......a couple of the letters indicate that they have had rego back-dated over 3 months !!! plus a fine of up to 40 quid !!
Maybe its time to do another thread on comparing rego costs between states, we have enough members from most places.....
One good thing - Concessional rego for club bikes >30 years old is only $65 per annum up here !!! More and more of my old bikes are becoming eligible

Under the heading of be careful what you wish for this idea seems to me to be a ploy to make the points system operate beyond normal borders so if you get (as a NSW biker) busted in Queensland you'll lose NSW points, sounds like a crock to me and as for the ease of transferring regos etc how often do you do that?javaman wrote:What about double demerit thing? Don't trust these pricks, this will only end up costing everyone the maximum amount that they can extort, end of story.

but points deduction already works ...between states

however AT THE MOMENT
the points get knocked based on the state you are licenced in
eg..Vic does NOT do double demerits
no mention of what happens with this proposed scheme
I am also curious with those of us who have
an AUSTRALIAN licence issued (in my case coz
I have heavy vehicle endorsement ) by Vicroads
how this proposal impacts us

You guys don't have the 3/6 month option either. This is a great option, it would be shithouse if we lost it.
NSW have annual inspections now as well ?? It's just like the old ACT system, it was a huge pain in the arse getting your car over rego every year.....Now they do randon inspections in carparks, it works well here.

l remember when trucks went to federal licences, all it really means is that you WILL lose the points no matter what state you are in.
Cause l've always live in Vic, it would take a bit to get used too the RWC every year but l dont think it is a bad idea, plus it would create more jobs. My uncle owned a servo in Yass, when it got bypassed, the servo shutdown, but he still worked as a mechanic because of the yearly RWC.

We don't even have RW inspections down here unless you get defected and have to have the vehicle inspected to have the defect removed. You wanna head to Elizabeth (pronounced "LizBef) and have a look at some of the death traps on the roads down there.Gosling1 wrote:Wise words indeed.............zzzak wrote:.......Don't trust these pricks, this will only end up costing everyone the maximum amount that they can extort, end of story.

There are more bombs on the road in Victoria than any other state I have seen.......because afaik, you only need to get a roadworthy down there if you sell the vehicle ?? So older cars can remain uninspected for decades ?? Stand to be corrected on this of course..
You would be comfortable using the current Vic system, but it is not necessarily the best....I think SA system is a lot more like ACT as well.

The 3 month/6 month option is good but I still think we pay more than most of the other states.........

Dead right..... scary huh..... I came from NZ where your car gets road worthied once every 3 years (for cars less than 10 years old) and then every year once your car hits ten years.... (I think thats the way it works anyway... ive never owned a car that didnt need to be assesed every year lol)... A lot less bombs over there..... although they are around, but get pulled over quick smart...Gosling1 wrote:you think ? With the current system, getting done interstate means that all you really need is the nerve to ignore all the "Your fine is overdue. Please pay now", "You fine is really overdue. It has been passed to <relevant> for collection" and "You still haven't paid your fine, cahn. Fuggen do it or we send the boys around" letters until the statute of limitations on the offence expires.
If you don't pay a fine in the state which issues your license, they can cancel the license to coerce you to pay. Interstate, no such luck. The various state bureaucracies don't listen to each other that intently. Going to a national licensing system will remove this happy little set of loopholes.
