Not in the Western suburbs of Melbourne, it's 100km to the nearest corner - just means we get up extra early.

This advise sounds great until trying to follow someone really quick and crash

You still need to ride within your own limits - just use them to push a little bit and learn.
It helps to if you can ask them to not pull too far ahead - use them as a carrot to aim for. Many good riders are happy to keep a newbie in their mirrors to show them the ropes.

Although this thread is older than methusula, I felt my recent riding experiences might be worth sharing and this was the closest thread to it which I could find. Today, I want to talk about kilometres or Miles. Just as important as trust in your tyres, is doing miles. Of late, I have not had the opportunities which I once had to get out and ride. Home life and work have conspired to reduce my seat time to bare minimums and for the most part, the rides I have done have been solo, or with a slower rider. So, I have not been out and about fanging with the usual crew I ride with, which for the most part are as fast as me and some faster. Yesterday's ride, highlighted how rusty I had become. The guy who i usually punt around with, flowing from corner to corner briskly, but without hammering throttles or brakes, was just in a different league to me yesterday ......well, at least at the start of the day!!! My road reading skills had disappeared and I was very unsure as to which way the next corner went. With the benefit of lots of klms, those reading skills become sharp and you are almost delivered with a 6th sense as to which way the road will go next and how tight or wide the corner is.
The other thing which had gone, was corner entry speeds. even though I was still able to do double plus 10 on the advisories, my entry speeds were a good 10kph sloweer than the guy Iwas following. Fortunately, I managed to tag on behind on a section I knew well and this ended up giving me back some of theat confidence. Am I back to full tilt yet...no. But, I am heading in the right direction again. A few more regular rides will see it retuirn to full strength I am sure.


But my point is, if we are to keep learning, or just even perhaps to maintain our current skill sets, we really need to be doing klms!! Lots and lots of KLMS!!!! Preferably, with people who are safe and perhaps just a touch faster than you!!!!

Once again, the golden rule with all this is one I have mentioned previously.........."Your tyres are better than you" So as Wattie says so often, "JUST LEAN THE FUCKER"!!!
