OK, after a little break to recoup some funds and dive in again, today I ventured down to Wollamia (a little town near Huskisson on the south of Nowra) and had Brightworks Metal Polishing do what I had been unable to do, polish the oxidised pitting out of the rims. It was a lot harder than what Mike thought it would have been because the rims were anodised, but I think you'll agree that it was worth the effort and the small extra expense.





I mightn't feel ashamed about putting these back on the bike now.

I also have picked up a pair of old tyres that I can put on the rims while the rest of the construction is in progress to protect the rims and allow the rolling chassis to be moved around.

Thanks, guys. As I've said before, if anyone had told me that I'd be this far down the track with what is going to be a great resto, I'd have laughed at them, seriously. I owe most of it to some very clever people who are helping with work/advice/encouragement.

It is a massive bonus to have these carbs donated to the project - I have some more photos of recent work done on the motor, will be adding these tonight. Not sure about *ready in no time* Steve there will be a need to $pend $ome dollar$ on the motor $hortly........wait till you see the photos of the clutch !!!

Here is a shot of the rear drum-brake hub that has been kindly donated to this project from one of the punters in the Z Owners Club in Victoria. He has also sent up a new battery box which will come in handy, as the old one is rooted......

This hub needs some new wheel bearings (ordered) and also the removal of the flaking chrome plating around the perimeter of the hub. This hub should then match up nicely with the rims that Phil has had polished up.





A couple of weeks ago, I removed the clutch cover to have a look at the clutch......

well, it looked like a total rusted mess - all the plates looked like they had rusted together. Ugly. So I just started to give it a drenching in WD40. All over the clutch basket (which could still be rotated) - and into the 5 clutch-spring bolts......these looked totally rooted, and its always a danger with these bolts of snapping them in the hub, or breaking off the castings on the hub itself......so plenty of soaking was required. I hit it up every 2nd night with a good drenching.

This paid off today - all 5 bolts came out without snapping in half, and none of the hub castings snapped either. Happy with that ! Not so happy with the clutch springs though.....as the bolts came out, the clutch springs literally fell apart in my hands !! Never seen anything like that before......they just crumbled apart !

Here are some photos of the clutch apart........I had to use a set of 90deg circlip plier ends to work each plate - friction & steel - out from the hub. None of them were coming out easily, but the liberal soaking with WD40 meant that they eventually did come out, one at a time. Check the colour of the plates !! Those small rings are what is left of the clutch springs.....










One last shot of the clutch, with about half the plates out......




I didn't manage to get the cases split this weekend, but did pull the sump out to have a look........

This is *exactly* how the innards looked, the sump here has basically just been peeled from the bottom of the motor and laid flat.........( and even that was a bit of work)....check the first photo - those red circles highlight 2 small nuts and a piece of metal from ?????? sitting in the oil sludge !!

That is it for now, we will be up for a complete new clutch ( the hub is really dirty but can be cleaned) - but none of the friction plates or steel plates are capable of being re-used. Clutch springs are cactus !

Onward ever onward. Next update will be the cases being split to determine the condition of the bottom end, then everything gets cleaned - engine cases and sidecovers to be repainted, new cam-chain ( and probably a few of those expensive cam-wheels as well......) - then time to start bolting everything back together.
