I found a cheaper alternative yesterday. I stole some bars and clamps from a BMW R100, drilled the headstock for one hole, and made a backing plate for the other. The clutch line fits but the brake line will need lengthening at some stage (have loosened the brake divider)

Made an amazing difference ...

Austreetfighter.com sell MX kits, they're basically tow mounts with M8 bolts, you drill into the headstock and bolt them on, then attach the bars to this, this may have to be the way to go. The last owner seems to have fabricated the bars, so he could lower the front end.

Thanks for all the help ...

Most of the bike really. Well, the mechanical side of things.

Okay, pulled the jets out of the second set, turns out they were 105's, not 110's like they're supposed to be. Replaced with 110's, made no difference.

Changed the spark plugs to the right ones, no difference.

Raised the needles, and ...

We've spent about 5k so far. It's got an R1 subframe and ducktail, Honda CB500 tank (although that's being changed to a Z1000 tank for handlebar clearance), streetfighter front fairing, we completely remade the wiring harness and dashboard, it had a ZZR600 rear wheel but that didn't fit, etc etc ...

I think I may have it. I'll find out when i get home in a few hours (don't you love having the internet at work?)

GPX's have highly restrictive airboxes. I've pissed this off, and put on a set of K&N's. Both sets of carbies perviously ran with airboxes.

The K&N's will have a much lower pressure ...

Yeah, I agree with that, forums do make it a bit painful to diagnose things.

I remember seeing a post about a month ago on another forum of a guy describing the exact same problem, do you think I can find it now?

The main jets aren't getting a chance to open really, as the needles come up the ...

Idle needles are set to standard.

Fuel tap is not being used, and yes I have blocked off the vacuum point correctly.

I agree, it is happening when I come onto the main jets. I noticed especially with the old carbies, it started dying as soon as the diaphrams started to rise. They didn't rise ...

Everything points to fuel starvation, I know, but with the fuel line pulled off the carbies, fuel gushes out of it. I'll dot point the situation:

- Bike is an 88 GPX750
- Fuel tank is Honda CB500, with fuel line straight from tank to carbs. With the line removed from the carbs, fuel gushes out ...

Have been doing most of the trials without the air cleaners, no difference.

I've got the correct plugs in my hands, will fit them when i get home, cross fingers that fixes it. I'm not holding myb reath though...

What about an incorrect air gap between the 'distrbutor' and the pickups?

Actually probably a good place to ask, the bike's a streetfighter, currently it's got a honda CB500 fuel tank, although I've got an '04 Z1000 tank to go on it, fits remarkably well. No one has a fuel connection piece they want to sell (the bit that bolts onto the left side of the tank)

On that ...

There is no air box, it's running a set of K&N pod filters, could this be the problem?

I've taken the fue line off the carbies and held it in a bucket, fuel gushes out at a stupid rate, so i'd say fuel is getting to the carbies okay.

I'm not sure whatthe functions of pin 9 and 10 are, but i'd say ...

I stand corrected, i was reading the wrong part of the book, I was reading for 600's. The 750 reaches 40 degrees at 3500rpm. Which is what my engine does, the ignition timing is spot on. Using a strobe light, it's on the 'F' mark at idle, and at 3500 it reaches the top mark. About 500rpm after this ...

GPX750 won't rev

I've got an 86 GPX750 that's being rebuilt. The bike runs fine to what i'm guessing is about 5000rpm (no tacho), but if you try to open the throttle any further, the engine stalls. It's as if it's running out of fuel. It doesn't matter whethe the bike is stationary or being ridden.

I know this isn ...

Wow, that site's really useful. Turns out I was right, all I need is a pulley and a belt and I should be able to put it back together. I've got the part numbers so i'll get costs forthem new, but i think I should be sitting down when they give me the prices..

Any ideas for second handers?

Belt driven alternator Q's

I've got an 86 GPX750 that came without an alternator. I tracked down a belt-driven alternator for it. I can mount the alternator fine, but there's nothing to drive it left on the engine.

I haven't got a manual so i'm assuming that there is supposed to be a drive pulley coming out of the engine ...
