The Campground lives......

Postby Phil » Mon Dec 05, 2005 7:01 pm

Spoke to someone at phillip island motor sports today regarding the future of the trackside campground.

Some of you may have noticed in the latest issue of AMCN that the proposed redevelopment of the phillip island GP circuit and surrounding environs includes a go kart track, a720m replica of the main circuit

anyway according to the plans its right smack bang in the middle of my residence for 3 1/2 days per year :x

with the (go kart) track programmed to be complete by christmas 2005 - yes about 4 weeks away - i was pleased to hear that the "trackside" campground will be operational for the wsb come march. the camping will continue in its current location with the (go kart) track used as part of the access road.

after spending the entire time this year reminding some of the - cough - more virginal pilgrims - about traditions i was concerned that our tradition of camping at the island would be taken away, i'll sleep easier tonight knowing all shoudl be well.

hi all you frog riders,if what is true to what we have seen in the herald sun and amcn about the go kart track being built in the camp ground site.... the tent will make a return back at the island for one last time to keep the crowds happy.....the little track will be ideal to warm up for the run back on the big track...lap time 15m.32s.with slicks i may better that by at least a minute...... hi to all, joey(aka cunnox)...... frogs live in the gutter...

Fans who choose to stay in the Trackside Campground are in for a big surprise at the forthcoming 2006 Yamaha Superbike World Championship event at Phillip Island from March 3-5.

The trackside campground layout and facilities have been revamped and part of that development has seen a Mini Grand Prix Circuit constructed which is 740 metres long and is essentially a scaled down replica of the main track layout. This will operate as a go-kart circuit when major events are not taking place on the main track.

The improvement to the campground that will be available for patrons in March include:

A significant increase in size to compensate for the space lost to the bitumen surface. The eastern and southern perimeter fences of the campground have been moved closer to Doohan Corner and Southern Loop with some great new vantage points.

A campground extension has been made into the large area of trees near the entrance and this area will be reserved for volunteer officials as well as a quiet area for campers who want to be a little further away from the revelry

A special area on the western boundary has been allocated for the Superbike event patrons with Campervans, Caravans or camper trailers. The rest of the campground with spectacular views across the circuit will be reserved exclusively for patrons who arrive on a motorcycle

Each area will now be provided with it's own dedicated toilet block

The new pit building adjacent to the campground entertainment area will be utilised as a the campground managers information area and first aid station.

Access to the campground ill open from 0900 on Thursday March 2nd and will remain open until Monday March 6th at 1200. Bands will play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in the entertainment area.
