Chain Maintenance (little help please)

Through neglect and stupidity I have let my chain get a bit out of shape...

is there a way to take the chain off sothat I can do some serious maintenance and checking on it?

I want to remove it, degrease it, and then work and check every link with CRC and then put it back on the bike...

If that is not possible, what is another alternative? (I dont have a race stand at the moment).

Orig chains are endless so if you want to take it off you will need a chain breaker.... Or be very, very careful with a small hand held grinder..
You will then need to buy a joining link to put it back together...

I'd try to do it on the bike, but you will need a stand...

you need the chain specs and chain stretch measurements
as outlined in the manual

It seems to have a joining link like I had on my bicycle... can this be unclasped?

If it has its not the original chain.
But its easier to get of, if the link end hasn't been peened...

Screwdriver and hammer to knock the u clip of and the rest should push out... unless its been peened over which is back to the chain breaker or grinder...

or if you are a real masochist, you can use a hand file in place of the chain breaker/grinder.
did that once, and only to put a new chain on after i snapped it at the creek.....never ever ever ever again!!! but your arm muscles will certainly get a workout..

You could scrub the chain with some Kero and tooth brush while still on the bike, though a little stuff around without no stand.
If you have the clip on the chain needle nose plyers would be best I think to take it off. If you buy a new chain the instruction show how too put it on so it would be the opposite to take it off.(hard to explain) If a good Kero clean and oil does not fix the chain a new one might be in order.

Back in the days when the dark forces were around...........

Remove chain from bike
Steal mum's best baking tray and arrange chain inside add enough kero to cover chain and leave overnight.
Remove chain from baking tray and scrub with Mum's bestest scrubbing brush............Discard kero from baking tray over next door's fence
Replace chain in baking tray and pour in old motor oil........stand baking tray on arrangement of bricks stolen from next doors wall and put candle under tray.
Light candle and retire to drink copious amounts of alcohol (well, fuck it ya can't go for a ride)
allow oil to bubble merrily until you run out of alcohol...blow out candle and allow oil to cool.
Wipe chain with a rag, making sure to drip it over the furniture/carpets etc.
Refit to bike and piss off for a couple of days until
1. Your mum's forgotten (not likely, but we all live in hope)
2. The neighbours have forgotten about it

Thank krist we don't have to do that anymore Rossi, besides everyone has rendered their brickwork now.
The kero and brush is the way I do it, dirty job but its gotta be done.

Yes, and depending upon the condition of the joining link, you may still need a chainbreaker to push this link apart..........

Make sure when you replace the clip, after cleaning/lubing the chain, that the closed end of the clip is facing the front sprocket on the upper run.

ie. if you fit the chain back together on the lower run, then the closed end is facing the rear of the bike. Don't overlook this.

Geez all that chain stuff looked technical, just grab the chain at the back of the sprocket and pull back on it and if you can see daylight between it and the sprocket its stuffed/stretched well a mm wont hurt but much more than that i would be looking for a chain and sprockets.

When you adjust it you want it so when you push up it doesnt touch the swing arm but misses by a few mm say 5 mm the reasoning behind this is you dont want the chain to pull tight when the suspension bottoms out becuase it will pull the front sprocket out of the engine casing if it happens with enough force.

And i reckon you are big enough that the swing arm will be going up and down a bit.

Thats the less technical version make sure you get a good oring chain if you need to go get one and sprockets as well.
