Crack in engine cover

Hi i just found a tiny tiny pin hole in my engine cover (left side) on my ZX2r what i was wondering is can i just put a spot of weld on it to stop the oil coming out or should i get a new cover?

Some of those casing materials don't weld too well. Personally I'd be getting another cover. But you could try welding as a temporary measure.

A GS500 cover costs $90.... so Im sure it shouldnt be much more... a wrecker should be able to get you one too

If by pin hole you mean something small then you could try one of the epoxy based metal repair/fillers.

Tons around but get a high temp one... eg. http://www.alvinproducts.com/

Used em for trackside engine cover repairs in the dirt before and work a treat. Cant recall the actual one though.

Your not thinking of JB weld are you? Almost fixed a hole in the casing of my smelly trailie a while ago, but it was in a bastard of a place and I never could get a perfect seal.

Try screwing a small self tapping screw into it, may have to drill it out a bit, put some locking/sealant paste onto the screw. Might work.

I'd try the JB Weld if it doesn't work buy the cover.
I did the JB Weld Two years ago on my sons 50. No oil leaks and no problems.......good luck

I mean go with the screw idea , but remember that screws can vibrate out !


( like my chain cover all of a sudden not being there anymore :S)

What you need is a small amount of Devcon. Its an aluminium-based epoxy resin that is heat-resistant up to about 200deg from memory :? . It is the best stuff on God's Green Earth for fixing stuff like that.

I regularly used to use it when repairing base gasket surfaces on single-cylinder 2-strokes........you know, old mate chooky legend fixes his own bike......" Lever the bastard cylinder off with a big screwdriver............Woops, look at that butchered gasket surface...." just apply Devcon, when it sets it can be machined/filed flat.......

In an emergency, if you can't find any Devcon ( the real McCoy), then those 'Metal-repair' tube-kits from SuperCheap'N'Nasty will do the bizz.

If you glue remember to remove any trace of oil using your prefered oil removing solvent.

Stick a bit of chewing gum in it and rev the farker hard. The heat will solidify the gum and it'll be harder than the original cover. I'd recommend spearmint, but juicy fruit will also be just fine :wink:

*edit* Gum has to be chewed before application, dry gumn will simply fall off :lol:
