Centrestands on zzr250

Postby Adz » Mon Nov 14, 2005 11:28 am

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone else scraps the centre stand on the zzr250 or is it maybe got something to do with my cornering techinque?? :? I am thinking about removing, had a quick look yesterday and it looks like it is only 2 bolts and a spring to remove, has anyone else done this. I assume it's not illegal to remove?

I always scraped mine on the GPX250.
I debated taking it off but it was too useful.
Try leaning/hanging off more.

pretty sure it's the centrestand as it does it on both sides and the new shinny rough polished look sort of makes it easy too spot  hmmm might try changing my style alittle and then if that doesn't work , off she will come :)

ive got to ask, hows your suspension setup? too hard, too soft?

I was wondering if it was a bit soft and it was over compressing in the corners a bit.

Adz, I get the same problem, I've scraped off a considerable chunk of my centre stand. I find that it has a tendancy to bounce up the rear whell when cornering, which is just unsafe... Mine's coming off asap. Gnome said it was a bit tricksey what with the two cans getting in the way. Ask him for some advice. -J.

Get rid of it!!!

Yes you should get off the bike more, and when you do that, lean the whole show over further again! Then you will corner faster. Then lean some more. Etc. etc.

When you are getting your knee down and grinding the pegs you are leaning far enough for road riding.

You can increase the preload on the rear shock. I've only had mine stand scrape once when I low sided thanks to a car.

I increased the preload on mine and found it to feel better around the corner.

You don't have terribly much in the way of suspension adjustment on the ZZR-250, but you can adjust the pre-load. I am somewhat heavier than most  so I found the only way to make the ZZR have any semblance to acceptable handling was to wind the pre-load up to the maximum available - this also had the added benefit of lifting the rear, making it less likely to scrape the centre stand (though it still did often enough)

To adjust your pre-load you need to screw up the stepped collar which surrounds the shock and locates the bottom of the spring. Although you should be able to do this on the bike (preferably using a c spanner rather than a hammer and a screwdriver), the location is an absolute bitch to get to, so I ended up pulling the spring and shock out, compressing the spring with a g-clamp and turning the pre-load collar up.

Like others have said, I found the centre stand really useful when servicing so left it in place and got used to the occasional bounce and slide when it dug into the road. :D

I used to scrape everything, side and centre stands, pegs and eventually my exhaust. I'm running with my pre-load on full, I've jacked up the rear by about 50mm(custom link arms) and I've taken off my centre stand ( I have a race stand for servicing). Only my knees scrape now.

I know my ZZR is a 600 n all, but I've only ever scraped the centrestand twice (WOOHOO), on exactly the same corner on two different days. I'm totally sure it was that, cause it bears the grazing to prove it.

Considering I've done over 30,000 km on it now, and its only ever happened in that one spot (you know the really tight bit out of Strath Creek on the Broadford - Flowerdale Rd), I haven't worried about it. If it was happening all the time, that'd be another story.

ok well am going to look into adjusting the the pre-load setting this weekend. As i am now scrapping the stand every morning through a couple of slip turns on the way to work. There is one were the road has a slight dip in the surface and the stand hits quite hard (can feel the actually bump come through the frame.)

Now next questionm, how does preload work? is it about stiffing the rear spring rate? If so is it marked which way to adjust to firm up :? thanks for all the great advice guys

cheers stewy

http://www.ibike.com.hk/01_bike_report/ ... arsusp.jpg <- this is one of the pics i was hunting for, it shows the top of your suspension, im not sure if that is the same as on your suspension, but the collar basically rotates and the little ramps press the coil tighter increading the pre-load as you rotate it further..

http://www.moto.it/news/0409-intermot/K ... r_susp.zip is the other option, the two collars rotate and you compress the spring/up the preload by rotating the bottom collar and using the top collar to "lock" it in place after teh right preload is selected. here is another pic, but from a lower down angle.

Sorry its not all coherant & fully explanatory, but i've been up too early this morning.
