zx7 track tyres

Postby Kwakked Up » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:44 pm

Hi Folks

Well I have been slowly chipping away at the 7 getting her track fit (unlike the rider). She now has braided lines, quick action throttle courtesy of a 04 zx10, grearing -1 on front and + 2 on rear and fitted up the race glass last weekend. A few more things to get sorted yet, suspension is the highest priority.

I have done a couple of track days on Pirelli Pures but they are going to need replacing shortly. So here is the question, what tyres to put on her? As $$$ are tight I was thinking of a sticky set of treaded tyres so I dont need to by a second set of rims for wets.

Any recommendations ?

HaHa! Kwakked up, any tyre recommendation question always opens a can of worms! Everyone has their own opinion and preference.

Honestly, most manufacturers make a good sticky treaded tyre that are right at home on the track. So, you should be OK with most options.

As you are looking for a set that will offer some grip in wet to avoid the two sets of rims scenario, just be cautious with the tread pattern you choose. There are 'treaded tyres' out there that are for homologation purposes and have very little shoulder or edge tread - effectively a slick in these areas. So obviously you would want to avoid these as they won't offer any side grip in the wet.

My personal preference for a grippy treaded tyre on the track that offers some wet adhesion is a Dunlop Sportmax Q2. I stress, entirely personal preference!!! I don't mind their feel, get a decent track life out of them and offer some OK grip in the wet.

Hope this helps narrow your choice! :)

Thanks for all the tips, much appreciated :kuda:

I was looking at Dunlop Q2, Michelin Power Super Sport (replacement for the Pure) and Pirelli Supercorsa. I couldnt find the Bridgstone equivalent so will check out the 003.

Cheers

Have used the Q2's on the road and track - good tyre but horrible in the wet... Avon Viper Vp2 are great also, single compound tyre, great in the wet but wear very quickly..

Slicks i like Pirelli superbike - Front sc1 rear sc2

My 2c
