Brake disc grinding?

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to where I could get brake discs ground in the Sydney or Illawarra area??

good luck with that mate, not many places touch bike discs these days as its too easy to go under the minimum thickness, and not having the right attachments for the brake-lathes to suit bike discs.

If you are prepared to send your stuff to Victoria - try Planet Discs. They specialise in bike discs - but get a firm quote from him before you post the discs down.....

If you could post them up here that would be great, would help out Jason more so than me. I don't have any discs which need surfacing at the moment - one local mechanic here does mine if he *really* has to ... and does a reasonable job - but he doesn't like doing them at all really.

G'day guys... thanks for the info, I didn't know disc grinding was so difficult to get done?

I recall getting a ZXR750J rear disc machined by a guy working out of his garage in Revesby around 15 years ago, I think he advertised somewhere back then?
Have found some links to a guy (Ripperton) who seemed to be into grinding discs (with what seemed pretty good results) but eventually contacted him yesterday to find he's no longer doing it.

I understand bike discs would be very difficult to grind or machine because of their relative flexibility & probably I'm guessing because there's so little meat to machine before the min. thickness is exceeded.

Anyway... any advice appreciated, PM me if you prefer??

One isnt to keen to do it for ppl he doesnt know...

Rear disks aren't usually a problem, they tend to be a bit thicker, smaller diameter, and more importantly, non floating.
To machine the front disks properly they need removing from the carriers, assuming they are the normal riveted type pins, this would necessitate new pins and re-riveting after machining. It can be done without diss-assembly, but the machining setup becomes a real pain in the ass.
Putting a micrometer or vernier across the disk surface will not give an accurate indication as to whether or not they will clean up before they reach minimum thickness, you will need a micrometer with pointed anvils to determine that likelihood.
All in all, not worth the bother, unless you absolutely cannot buy new ones.

^^ good advice this. If these are just replacement discs for a ZXR750, these can be purchased new from a number of suppliers.........

Thanks koyote, but wallet moths aren't the issue, despite a very thorough search, OEM discs are no longer available & for one of my Kwacka's I want to retain as much originality as possible.

Anyway.... I'll retain the original discs on my ZXR & go quality aftermarket (OEM look) for my ZX7R project bike... unsurprisingly research has found the cheap (Chinese?) discs should be avoided due to poor quality machining.
