Maybe I should just replace my S2950 with another then, as that worked great apart from a little shutter lag. The lense comes out quicker than your cock at a wet bickie contest. ;)

Vanrootn what is the one you have? What specs and can you give me a little more detail than it's amazing for a compact???

The lense on the Leica is great, love how it performs and very user friendly...........compact and tough, great design. Its also what Ken Duncan uses (sometimes) :).

Im looking for another one one..........I want to mount it to my bike since it takes better low-light than the GoPro.

hi there had a quick look on teds and think that the closest to what you are looking for is a Sony Cybershot HX9V http://www.teds.com.au/sony-dsc-hx9v
although none of the sub $500 cameras seem to use AA bateries any more all lithium ion.none that i saw from info at teds anyway.
16mega pixel only 16x zoom but is equiv to 384mm in 35 mm scale.
memory is on sdhc cards which are avail every where,
fast start up from reveiws i read .under 1 sec
does panoramas
sample images i saw look great for a compact and not spending your life savings on glass.

,and price is near enough to $400.

In terms of speed ie how quickly from whoa to go when you want to take a shot in a hurry our Cybershot is heaps better than the Canon we had. The Canon always lagged quite a bit when you hit the shoot button but the Sony was really quick. The Canon also took a while to start up, the Sony was pretty instant

What I found was that it was great when you needed a photo in a hurry. In all the time we were away I don't think it took a bad shot, the panorama was really easy, red eye didn't seem to be a problem, it was easy to download photo's out of, the battery lasted for ages

Camera suggestions

Postby fireyrob » Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:12 pm

We have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ6 which I bought 2-3 years ago. Like u wanted a compact and not a bog DSLR. Its only 12x Optical Zoom and I think around 10Megapixels. Its been great with the kids. Under 2 seconds to turn on and snap. Price I think was around $500-$600 back then. The Mrs love it except when I point out that the shots are so good you can see each chin or pimple

The two that are on the probable list so far are as follows.....

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30

Fuji Finepix F600EXR

If anyone has one let me know your thoughts.

I have a Panasonic FZ18. Great camera and the 18x zoom works as expected. The biggest downside with it is the shutter delay. I have still managed to take some quite reasonable shots of bikes with it, but it requires careful planning and pre-focussing. I'm not sure if this has been resolved on newer models, but a mate has the newest version and is impressed with it.

The pictures below should give you some idea of the zoom ability, and the amount of a scene that you can fit in at the other end of the range is also quite impressive.
