ZRX1200R - Issues?

Postby loubre » Fri Jul 22, 2011 6:24 pm

Hi all rex gurus, so now my youngest will be getting her bike P's in a month or so and after a long and convoluted devious plan whereby she will inherit my GPX250 we have managed to convince the board of control (kicking and screaming) that I do really really really need another bike to get to work etc, I am looking at an 05 ZRX1200R up here, local bike in very good nick with about 17000k's on her, what I'm wondering is there anything in particular I should be looking out for or any major issues with them? Thanks everyone in advance!

I put 45000ks on mine from new, and the only thing I could fault it for was the front pads and discs wore very quickly, the discs did need replacing at around the 17000 mark, so I'd check that out. Other than that it was a solid and reliable bike without issues.

The only real fault to look out for is the starter chain tensioner hitting on the clutch basket.

To see if its a problem, take the oil filler cap off and look at the basket. Ill post a pic later of what to look for if you like.

Bike belongs to a mate, he's upgrading to a brand new Z1000 (black one, can't really be a kwaka can it?, it's not green), he's asking 7500 which from what I've seen floating round is a good price considering it's in bloody good nick and quite low mileage

The only thing to look out for is the front wheel lifting off the ground and cramps in your cheeks from smiling too much. 8)

edited for accuracy ! and truth !!

also - Loubre - watch out for all the dribble marks on the tank from owners drooling. Dribble marks dry clear, but leave a stain around the outside.

If you see any off-white stains on the tank - just walk away mate. The owner was really fond of his bike !

Well theres something wrong with the FZR then! Having raced an FZR1000 & still owning a 05 ZRX1200 I can tell you the FZR would be slightly better in straight line performence & handling. But the ZRX makes huge torque & thats why it feels like its pulling harder. The ZRX has very little in the way of common issues. Cam chain tenioners play up from time to time. But no other reguler issues. They are heavy on brake pads & tyres, simply because of the weight & performance. But they are as strong as an ox & very robust bike, with many seeing well over 100,000 Ks without any problems at all .
Like nelso mentioned front wheel lifting can be a problem relateed to throttle control. he he he ;)

Oh probably should have mentioned that the FZR is an 87 grey imported Genesis so probably not really a fair comparison
