weird wear pattern

Postby samhasa636 » Mon May 02, 2005 10:04 am

After a blast up the putty road yesterday I was inspecting the wear on my rear tyre. Normal feathering/balling was present from edge to edge. However, the top was smooth (expected from highway riding) and two bands an inch wide at 10 and 2 o'clock. So, smooth-feathered-smooth-feathered on each side. WTF? I dont tend to ride for long distances half keeled over on each side?
Has anyone seen this before and is it normal or is it telling me something about my setup?

well
I can answer the wear pattern at 10 oclock
It comes from the road camber
in parts, the road camber is where it should be 3-5° off the flat
(to allow for drainage) but given the state of our roads*
road camber can be up to 10°..even 15° on a flat straight section
and yep
that will wear (scuff) the tyre at 10 o'clock

not sure about the other side, unless you were going backwards

*and given the amount of fuel taxes we pay,
our roads should be farkin' PERFECT!

cheers
GOTTA LUV the 12R!!

I think I've come across the same thing. I assumed it was just smoothing as a result of turns and bends in normal traffic conditions, less aggressive riding.

If that was true I would expect it to be smooth (as it normally is) all across the top and still fethered on the sides.
Posting pics soon.

The strips on either side a probly from the lean angle you are at when you start to accelerate harder out of a corner...
Usually its about 1/2 an inch or so from the tyre edge as you don't accelerate at full lean. As the bike starts to sit up right you accelerate harder and wear the tyre at this point..

Ok one more question for ya Sam, does it have 5 different wear points or 4 (From egde to edge) . If its got 5 i would agree totally with Madkaw n its just how you ride that piece of road or ride the twisties in general its not a dual compound tyre & without seeing the picture i dont thinks its anything to worry about. If your less then 65kg drop the psi to 32F & 33R n it should wear a little more evenly as it will let the rear flex more under accelleration n get a more even wear pattern.
My 2cs.

hmmm If he's worried about wearing the tyre on the sides from accelarating I would suggest increasing the pressure not decreasing it. Decreasing will allow the tyre to warm up quicker, get hotter, therefore softer and then wear quicker under load..

But then theres nothing wrong with tearing up the sides of a tyre, it shows your having a go...:-)

My 2 cents, and I'll raise you 3 to 5 cents...:"-)
