Mick LC has done exactly this. He'll possibly be along shortly, an edit of thread title would probably attract more help.

Also have you seen this?

Yep, I put a later model 750 cdi and pickups etc. into mine and it was well worthwhile. I also helped Metaltriumph put an aftermarket one into his z650 and it was a lot easier to install than mine was. It means you can just set your timing once and then forget about it, plus it'll be easier to start.

Also look on the site that Bogan gave the link for above for the "WiredGeorge Mod" that ensures you get a good 12V to your coils instead of the crappy 9v you'll probably be getting with the standard setup.

There's also an aftermarket one made by jaycar you can assemble yourself. It's fully programmable, you have just got to be careful when tuning it up to make sure you don't stuff things up & potentially damage the engine.

Programmable High Energy Ignition System
Universal High Energy Ignition Kit (version 2 of the above kit i believe)

Capacitor Discharge Ignition Kit for Motor Bikes[/url] (this may be of interest to you).

If it hurts, you aren't doing it right.
