Gday, New, Need Help, Introduction

Postby Tilley1991 » Fri Feb 25, 2011 1:19 pm

Gday guys, my names Brad i am new to the forum, not new to forums, 19 years of age, apprentice fitter and turner.

The reason i joined this forum is pretty simple but if the atmosphere is right i will be around for the long haul, i have a 1990 ZXR250, and its a piece of shit, every single bike shop that i call tells me that they wont even take the time to look at my motorbike to get it running properly.

Now, i am honestly here to get some help, because i have decided that i want to keep my bike and i want to have it running and i am not going to palm off a bike with so many problems to some poor L plater that is going to end up getting himself killed in my place.

Well thats a little about me, why i joined, any questions and id be happy to answer them, just thought id start with an intro.

Welcome to KSRC, where you based at Brad? there might be someone close that can help out.......
I would guess that no bike shop is interested as its hard to get parts for the grey imports :?

Welcome aboard Brad.

What exactly is wrong with the bike? Or are you just looking to have it fully serviced / running smooth etc?

With an import you may find eBay is your friend for parts ;) As for doing the work - shouldn't be too difficult for servicing. Good service manual and some more experienced help can do wonders :)

From my point of view, if you think there is a compression issue I'd check that first, if it's stuffed you really may be better off not worrying about it.

Start reading do you have the workshop manual for the bike its always a good place to start (give a man a fish he eats for a day teach a man how to fish he eats for life) If you are willing to have a go at repairing it there is a lot of info here take you time fix one issue at a time until you are happy with the result then move on to the next issue 8)

Suggested order (my 2 cents which is probably way overvalued lol)
Compression issue - if it's really an issue it may not be worth fixing

The rest is mainly servicing issues
Valve clearances - check and adjust
Running rich / trouble starting - dismantle and clean the carbs paying special attention to the pilot circuit
Mismatched spark plug leads - probably worth replacing. Do the plugs at the same time.
chain - check the chain and sprockets and if worn replace and correctly tension the chain. If all good adjust the chain.
Fuel filter - fit a new one and clean the air filter while you're at it.
Brake lever - replace (eBay is your friend)
Bad brakes - worn pads / rotors? Spongy lever? Check the rotors for scoring and serviceable thickness (found on the rotor). Service the calipers with a caliper kit. Service the master cylinder. Flush old brake fluid with fresh clean fluid.

Mainly service stuff - except for the compression. Get that checked asap as that will determine the rest of the work. A workshop manual will be the next thing to get - it will go through everything else in detail.

If compression is fine then a good service should help the "won't rev under load" issue too.

Where are you in Sydney? I'm sure someone will pop up with a compression tester or recommend someone who can do it for you - like a KSRC Sponser such as Glenn @ All Fixed :)

Hey bud good trade to get into, I have been doing it for the past 7years and love it.

I used to own that model and have seen her insides :p a few to many times hehehe.

Where abouts are you located?? I may be able to help....

I reccomend valve clearance inspection first.
If valves are out comp will be low. Bike will be hard to start and run poorly.
Then for good measure carb clean, new sparkies and an oil and filter change and air filter change.
Chain tension can be done easily.
Mismatched bolts are annoying but not stopping you from riding, get some from work :P
What gaskets are missing??
Mis matched leads are an odd one, but so long as they are long enough they should be O.K
They don't come with a replaceable fuel filter, they have a screen that's ontop of the fuel tap in the tank.
Brakes, a good bleed should give you a better feel, as for lever, MCAS will help you there :)

Got any piccies? Maby even a video of her running???

Cheers,Tim
anyone can go fast in a straight line,,,,
