zx9r dyno

Postby gman017 » Thu Nov 11, 2010 1:44 pm

Hey guys

Recently fitted a K&N filter to my bike, I bought it with a Leo Vince exhaust so I thought I should get it dyno'd to make sure it was running ok. Bike came back at 137 bhp at the wheel.

How does that sound to you guys?

Wasnt too sure what to expect. had a read reviews that had the 2003 model rated at 150 bhp, but wasnt sure what it would be at the wheel with the better exhaust and air filter.

Cheers mate

You could have got 138 with the std filter and the mesh removed.. ;)
(I got more HP that way than a K&N on a back to back dyno run)

The K&N doesn't actually flow better than the std one, but will last a lot longer.. If you want better air flow you need a BMC Race, but not the best for the road.. :-)
But don't worry theres not a lot on it in any of the filters, especially on a dyno...

Interesting to note that the C Model ( earlier ) was putting out 147. What were the differences between Franks vs Phils (133).
Point to the thread if there is one.

Yess, that zx9r does honk... I lapped almost the same on that as I do on the zx10r.. but thats probly age related, I was younger then.. :-)
Its got a few bits on it...
Full Akro race system
Factory pro jet kit
Factory pro iginition advancer
Heads been match ported and shaved
Kleen removed
520 chain and sproks...
BMC race filter
(std cams)

Other stuff not HP related, but the gearbox is undercut, has Factory Pro shift kit, ohlins shock, ohlins fork internals and damper..
Had the shortest Domino throttle on it too, but Frank took it off...

I still have it, but sick of the scrutineers at track days continually telling me it was a high side throttle!

Interesting read on the board, quite a variance in some of the power levels. Makes 137 look pretty middle of the road.

The guy who dyno'd my bike offered to put a jet kit in it etc but it already exceeds my riding ability

Mine had full Akra system, std carb settings as they came from the factory - no jet kit, std filter with mesh still in and 126000 k's on it. ;)

I was always of the belief that a K&N air filter flowed better than standard. Funny how you get sucked into these things. I would assume remoiving the mesh on the standard would reduce its effectivness?

Other than the fact they last longer makes you wonder why its nearly the first upgrade people make. Glad I got it cheap off fleabay :D

Yep, thats what I was led to believe many years ago. I bought the K&N and the guy dynoing asked to to test it against the stock filter so I took it in and he tested the stock, then the K&N then the stock with mesh removed. The stock and K&N were the same and it picked up a bit over 1hp with the mesh removed (negligable).. The K&N sat on the shelf after that. One thing I noticed was the flow area on the K&N was a lot less than the std filter with the plasrit surround taking up a lot of space (on the 98 anyway)...

Did a search as one of the mags did a test on filters a while back, couldn't find that but found this on the cbr site. (I feel dirty :-) )
K&N gets less hp on a 929

We ran the following tests regarding air filters on a stock 929 with OEM exhaust, Hindle bolt on and Hindle full system:

OEM filter 3 runs:

OEM Exhaust best run: 121.5
Hindle bolt on best run: 124.0
Hindle full system best run: 133.5

K&N 929 replacement filter:

OEM Exhaust best run: 119.0
Hindle bolt on best run: 121.0
Hindle full system best run: 129.5

"Whacked" filter (all paper removed, both screens remained)

OEM Exhaust best run: 124.5
Hindle bolt on best run: 127.5
Hindle full system best run: 137.0

These test were run on 108 Octane Sunoco "pump" race gas on a DJ 250 and were made without any third party fuel management system (i.e. PC111 etc.) The test site is 530 ft above sea level and all readings are SAE sea level temp and pressure corrected from "actual" 80 degrees ambient temp and 74% relative humidity.

The same set of tests run on Torco Stealth 14 followed almost identical curves, but yielded an average of 3 additional HP except for the full system with the "modified" OEM filter which produced 144 to 146 HP in 12 consecutive runs.

Pair system was removed (and sealed) while the flapper was IN during all tests.
