Chain lube

When you put lube on your chain, you are not really lubricating it at all as it contains a permenant internal lubricant (x-ring, o-ring) all you are doing is preventing rust on the outside. And the only reason you need to apply more chain lube is because you've just taken off all of its protection (the black stuff) with 'chain cleaner'.

I've used kero or diesel and an old toothbrush to clean the chain. But recently found Motul Chain Cleaner that works wonders - didn't need the toothbrush, just a rag.
I know others use WD40.

Never EVER use WD40 on your chain

It is designed to penetrate so that it can loosen rusty bolts etc, when you put it on your chain it penetrates the ring-seals and breaks down the factory fitted internal lubricant...not good.

But you are helping with roller to sprocket lubrication. Otherwise why would you lubricate an o-ring or x-ring chain at all?

An industrial chemist from another forum rates this stuff -> dupont and has been using it for years apparently.

a little disturbed this morning after i found a little surface rust on a section of my chain. haven't lubed for a month or two - some twat stole my can from its hiding space in the communial carpark and i never replaced it. ive since ridden 1000k to sydney, and now wondering if i have to replace the chain, or if a decent scour will suffice?? are those chain brush cleaning boxes gadgets worth getting?

will try and get hold of some belray soon. im also curious what to use on a rag to clean the chain with? doesnt sound like wd40 is the way to go! i previously used cheap lube which unfortunately has made a v dirty chain.

i use wd40 on a rag to clean the chain then lube it with chain wax....no rust

well, i finally got around to buying another bottle of lube. the guys at northside motorcycles (syd) suggested that sometimes wax is not the best type of lube: granted, it doesnt go all over the wheel, but its not necessarily the best thing for the chain.

anywho - for what its worth, i thought i'd tell you of my experience. i did ask for belray but aparently its rather hard to come by. i ended up buying Motul chain lube 'factory line' for $21.95. it goes on white (i think i read someone writing about this earlier?) and worked a treat today.

nothing on my wheel after a 10k ride, and quietened down the chain quite noticeably. i laughed at the claim on the bottle "thanks to its boron tech formula, allows a gain of up to 1 additional horse power" - wooohoo hold onto your hats ladies!!

i was just a sucker to find a product that helped tell me where id been.

i use an old can of dry lubricant my old man has out in his shed, is that sort of thing cool.
