ZX7R won't start after running out of fuel

Postby Stumbows » Tue Jun 29, 2010 6:44 pm

I took the bike out today for a quick ride and forgot it was on reserve (I was really tired I know silly mistake) and then ran out of fuel. Got a jerry up to it with about 6 litres put in but for some reason will now just won't start, I even started running the battery down and had to get a mate out to give me a jump which we tried for 15 mins and it was turning the motor over fine it would just not start... I'm thinking maybe since I ran it down it's sucked some crap into the carbies and I need to possibly drain them. Any thoughts?

tried putting the fuel tap onto 'Prime' ? Do that and leave the bike for a few minutes....that might do it .

The tap only shows off, on and reserve nothing else... I've not got the tank off it to check if the carbies need draining but I can find the drain screw and can't see anything in the service manual about it either.

Can anyone tell me how to prime the fuel pump?

I have now got the bike started by opening the airbox cleaning it all out and squirting a little engine starter into the inlets but it's always been quite hard to start since I bought a couple weeks ago and have plans tomorrow to change over the air filter, do an engine flush, change the oil and filter after the flush and get my carbies balanced professionally.

Anyone think this should sort out the difficult starting issues?

Chuck in a new set of plugs as well. :)

Re fuel: the other thing you could have tried when you put fuel in tank was the clutch start the bike......full throttle let clutch out should fire up 1st go. Well that's what works on my 7.

If you run out of fuel on the zx7r(road bike). After filling up Best bet is to put in first gear clutch out and hit the starter button(hold down) for a few seconds and this turns the fuel pump. You can hear it clicking and as the float bowl fills up the clicking slows down till it stops. pull the clutch in and hit the starter again and it should fire right up. :D
