New indicators and electrical work...

Postby SonicZ750 » Wed May 19, 2010 6:35 pm

Hey all, me again.

As some of you know I have just bought a 2010 Z750 which Im thoroughly enjoying. Recently I have bought a fender eliminator and new LED indicators for front and back with the flasher resistors to get the flash rate correct.

My question is that I have next to no experience with wiring and electrical experience so do you think it would be a easy job for me to tackle by following instructions or should I take it somewhere and just outlay some cash to have it done properly??

Cheers people!
Cheers Matt...

Depending on where you are based at Matt you might be able to get some help from a member, but really it should not be too hard just dont rush it.

I found it easier on my zed to wire the LED indicators direct with a set of cheapo ebay wiring adaptors. Cost like $4 and allowed aftermarket indicators to plug right in with no mods. I then used an off the shelf Narva 2-pin "red" LED flasher can to replace the stock one. I tapped off the two wires going to the can and left the original connector there incase I went back. On the two wires just put some flat spade connectors and run to the new flasher can. All done and works perfectly with no permanent changes and no resistors and heat build up to worry about.

I haven't had any problems with heat running the resistors in series. On the GPz I replaced the flasher unit with a load independent flasher and no resistors to get the flash rate right; I couldn't be screwed on the Sprint or the FZR so just ran the resistors (the little Fizzer 250's dubious electrics actually worked better with the resistors because of the whole V = IR thing dropping the current draw with the resistors fitted). The only thing to remember is LEDs (like any diode) only work one way, so if you wire them up and they don't work, try reversing the connectors!

Gday all,

Ok, all this info got too much for me so I admitted defeat and took my parts and my bike to a certain dealership where I bought my bike to get this done. As it turned out, it also took them a day and a half to do!!

Now I have my bike back and it looks awsome with the new little LEDs and fender eliminator however another question.......

They are flashing alot quicker than the standard indicators but not really quickly like if the standard ones were broken so is that right? Do LEDs flash quicker than standard?? Is it also legal?

As far as I know they are wired up using the flasher resistors which I gave them...
Cheers Matt...

They may be the wrong resistance. The resistor needed will depend on the LED type and loading so not always does one value suit all. That is why it is better to have just swapped out the flasher can for an LED type. These will flash at the normal rate no matter what indicators are used, so even if you swap back to the original indicators they will still work.
