2002 636 Track bike (carby model)

Postby smithy5 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:02 pm

I did a track day at EC last Sunday and the bike ran like a dream for the first 5 sessions, never missing a beat.

However in the last session it started coughing and farting, similar to a fuel issue, but i'm pretty sure it's not a fuel issue. It occured mainly only at high revs, with an intermittent loss of power on acceleration. At Idle and low revs, it seemed there were no problems, however it actually stalled on me on downshifting comming up to turn two and again approaching turn 10 :?

I spoke with my mechanic and he can't look at it until next week, on the phone he said it could need the valves doing :o I thought I would see if anyone else has any idea's what might be going on ?????????? Cheers.........

Mate certainly no mechanic but I have had a similar problem and it was the air vent hose loose on the vent filter...the thingy that goes through to balance the carbies I think...worth a look see.

Had a similar problem on my carby GS500 - WATER IN THE FUEL! Dunno how but there was lots in the tank! Maybe do a quick flush into a big container and see what's in there.

Thanks, that's sounds like an easy cheap fix, i'll check it out before getting it to the mechanic

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a fuel problem. The tank was empty when I got to the track and I used the same container/fuel all day.

UPDATE:.........

Mechanic reckons it's No.3 ignition coil playing up........... OEM costs about $170 and he said it might be worth doing all 4, as the others may or may not start playing up aswell.......

so I would be up for $680  I think I will take a punt and just get the faulty one done at the moment.......... unless someone has a better idea.....
well..... i'm all ears

I said that but he said I might just be buying another faulty one or it might only last a short time.........

Thanks Rob, ................... That was my immediate thought, but the mechanic got me thinking that I might end up with the same problem half way through my next track day if I got a second hand one..............I'll take a punt with the second hand one........

Got any pics of the tracky? i've got the same ride but its all road... be nice to see what mods you've done for extra power.
Had it dyno'd at 103.4hp :)

I had a similar problem on my '01 model, was hesitating and slowing on the back straight at q.r. and good for the rest of the track, got steadily worse. I ordered a coil as I did not want to miss out on a trip to EC and OP I had booked, turned out it was the plugs and now I have a $170 coil in my shed that I dont need, pm me if you want it

The mods were done by a race set up mechanic for the previous owner....... I picked it up as is...... Mods include......
Billet alloy adjustable rearsets, BMC air filter, wet4u race glass, Acumen gear indicator, stock exhaust, well it was before it was cut in half and had the guts removed   Only thing i've spent money on is servicing, tyres and suspension adjustments.......... oh and now a 2nd hand coil $100

Thanks JD..... but i'm all sorted for now, i'll keep it mind if another one fails though....... They are hard to come by as no one seems to be wrecking this model........ I was actually suprised when ringing around all the wreckers how many said they had never wrecked this model..........
