05 ZX-6R sprockets

Postby MrPuttPutt » Mon Mar 22, 2010 6:28 pm

Hi to all,

After a great day at EC on Sunday, I was wondering why my recently purchased 05 ZX-6R was feeling a little anaemic out of the corners. Close inspection of the rear sprocket reveals that the previous owner had put a 40 tooth on. Why? I don't know. Maybe he wanted to get better fuel economy on the freeway .

My understanding is the 15/43 is the stock set up. I am thinking of going -1/+2 to 14/45. Does this sound right or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers

Keep it stock....... I went down 1 tooth & found for road riding I was looking for gears mid corner :?
I use the stock gearing at the track & its great ... 6th gear just before the tower Plenty of pull out of corners ... I would start there....
BTW I have a spare 42 tooth sprocket you can have .... I don't need it

strange Rob I could barely manage to click 6th before the the 300m marker on the straight on your bike. :?

I would have thought a gearing change would be a must on your model. At least drop a tooth at the front.

I dont have the Racechrono data from my ride on your bike to check the top speeds.

Thanks for the offer Rob. However, after talking to Craig at Flywheels, I am going to replace the chain, back (43) and front(14) sprockets (and get a dyno-tune at the same time). As a KSRC member, I will get a 10% discount... a nice bonus considering I go there regularly anyway. Your how-to is excellent, but I have the mechanical skills of a small furry mammal :) .

There does seem to be some confusion about the oem rear sproket size. The build date is 10/05. My owners manual says 15/43 , yet the Kawasaki parts bible says the 05 model is 15/40 and the 06 model is 15/43. Which is a bit weird, as I thought the were basically the same bike.

I have attached a few piccys of the bike post additions (based on a thread somewhere in this forum). Yoshi slip-on, PC-III, Hotbodies DB and hugger, GPR stearing dampner, T-Rex crash knobs, fender eliminator, EBC HH pads, and cycle pirates 360 degree adjustable footpegs. I am 193 cm and smashed my leg pretty badly a few years ago, so need a bit of extra leg room. At $100 or so from Indy Superbikes in the states, they are a cheaper option than rearsets.

I will keep you posted on the results of the sproket changes.

Cheers

mmmmm both my 05's had 43 rears...... so I would think that was standard from the factory, looks like there was a typo in the bible
Those pegs look great but you will loose corner clearance :o when my tracky was stock I ground the pegs a couple of times at EC... (hero knobs removed)
Pic is Chrissy trackday .... first outing on the track bike hence the lights etc & it ground the peg in lefts, quote a few times
I opted for Kaneg rearsets to get the clearance in the end & they worked brilliantly, I only moved them up 2 holes & back 2 holes from the standard position.

These pegs can rotate around the centre to give alot of adjustability back/up for the future. My right leg is maybe at 50% normal strength with a limited range of movement in my right knee, so I really need the extra room to be comfortable on the bike. As I get used to it and grind the pegs more and more, I will no doubt adjust them back and up. Being a gumby, I don't lean it over enough to get my knee down anyway  .
