Man's $60,000 car impounded

A MAN who told police he had spent $60,000 making his car look good had it impounded for doing almost double the speed limit.
The 21-year-old from Bundoora was caught doing 154kp/h in an 80kp/h zone in Sydney Rd, Campbellfield, on Thursday.

Police from the Fawkner Traffic Management Unit caught the man, who had just got his full license, driving his high powered Nissan Coupe about 5.40 pm.

The man had his car impounded for 48 hours and will get it back on Tuesday.Because of the Boxing Day holiday falling on Monday he's getting it back on Tuesday, even though it's more than 48 hours.

An 18-year-old probationary driver has lost his mother's luxury European car for 48 hours after being clocked driving at twice the speed limit in Melbourne's northwest.
The Greenvale man was intercepted on Mickleham Road, near his home, after police detected him driving his mum's Saab at 160km/h in an 80km/h zone about 3.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday, police said.
Three people were in the car with the man.
The man was fined $584, lost his licence for 12 months and the car was impounded for two days under Victoria's anti-hoon laws.
Fawkner traffic management unit's Senior Constable Matthew James said police were stunned at the man's recklessness.
"To travel at 160km/h at a busy time of the day with three passengers on board beggars belief," he said.

West Gate driver 'blew five times the limit'

An unlicensed driver who allegedly blew more than five times the legal blood-alcohol limit would have been too drunk to walk, Victoria’s top traffic police officer has said.
Police intercepted the 27-year-old Port Melbourne man at Laverton North following a call from a motorists who allegedly saw his car dangerously weaving across the West Gate Bridge about 8.20pm.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay said the caller had probably saved someone’s life.
He said the Volvo driver, who was travelling alone, returned a preliminary breath-test reading of 0.267 and had told police he had intended to drive from Williamstown to Apollo Bay.
‘‘From our experience he simply wasn’t going to get there. If he hadn’t been detected he would have either killed himself or someone else,’’ Mr Lay said.
‘‘0.267 - in most cases people at that level are too drunk to walk let alone be anywhere near a vehicle so we were very lucky that someone took the time to ring us so that we could intercept this driver.’’
The man’s reading was the highest for the holiday period.
Leading Senior Constable David Fisher said it was the highest he had encountered during 33 years of policing.
Police are expected to charge the man on summons with unlicensed driving and exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.
