Go with a semi-synthetic, fully synthetic and wet clutches don't mix.
Motorcycle's are inherently unstable...

smitty i remeber a thread about that.

whether its semi or full synthetic, you should stick to one brand and one type either semi or full synthetic.

The ZZR likes Motul 5100, the Honda likes Shell VSX. Both full synthetics. I have noticed with the Motul that shifts get noticably notchier the older the oil is. Haven't noticed that with the Shell.

It's not synthetic oils that are the problem, but certain friction modifiers in certain car oils. It's a hit and miss. If it's not sporting any "energy conserving" or "friction modified" labels, 10 to 1 it's fine for the bike.

And I agree with those who suggest staying with one brand - unless you're unhappy with its performance. Not that it'll make that much difference after the oil's been drained, even with the dregs still in the works. It's more a personal preference - I've found what works with my gear and see no reason to change.

.

and thats a good point
for those with wet clutches (most bikes are)
never ever ever use a car oil with friction modifiers in it....

cheers

I use Motul 300V fully Synthetic 10W40 or 5W40 don't use 15W50 as its way to heavy for a 600 u will notice a much lighter clutch and smooth as silk gear changes... cost a bit more but definatly worht it u won't go back trust me... go to motul.com and read up on some info

Have only ever used the fully synthetic Motul stuff... Actually, that's not quite true. I did tru Shell once. Had 15 false neutrals before I left the car park. Ok, maybe not 15, but for the life of the oil I was extremely unimpressed with the gearbox performance.

Now I'm back with the Motul.

Best if I don't tell you how much I pay for it.

I use Silkolene Pro-4 race(fully syn.), about $65/4Lt. Fuchs, the makers of Silkolene, sponsor the big K at almost every level of racing. That's enough for me to be covinced. The proof though is in the using. Firstly it(Pro-4) will mix with any other oil syn or not. It has no obvious signs of degredation after 5000/6000km of hard riding(13500rpm everywhere  ), only some suspended carbon or old oil residue(I'm not a chemist). Anyway check it out for yourselves sometime.

i too use motul 5100 (after Philthy phil recommended it) and my blade likes it, tho its true as it gets shit u get clunkier gear changes...its heaps better than shell, and i get non gen oil filters too...
if the service dept doesnt use motul (Bill's uses shell or castrol i think) i go to the shelf, put the motul on the counter, and tell em if they dont use it ill spit chips...i can tell str8 away if its got motul or shell in it...

For those who prefer semi-synthetic, Silkolene also produce one of those which is mightly impressive too.

I have previously used Shell Ultra full synthetic(10-40) $60/4L, but on the last oil change I did, I tried the Motul full synthetic (15-50?)300V $88/4L in the hope it would improve the gear changes.

It did NOTHING, except cost me $28 more for the $4L, & I'm going back to the Shell Ultra next oil change & sticking to it.

How many KM's do some of you push the bike before changing?
My bike won't do more than 2500km's without a Oil & Filter change!

Mine is changed at the regular service interval (6000km), and maybe feels off for the 5-600.
