Distribution chain spanner problems

Postby jeggink » Mon Mar 21, 2005 10:58 pm

Hey there... on a kawazaki zx6r 1999 the cam chain tensioner stopt working as a result a loud noise you can imagine... but luckely no vavle hit a piston...
enginge rotates nicely....

Tell me is it all right to just only replace the cam chain tensioner.. or do I have to change bothe the tensioner and the chain ?

thanks in advance for the help

with kind regards

If its a slappin noises perhaps your right, hard to know, there is a tiny bolt on the back of the timing chain housing, undo that and insert a small diameter long punch/screwdriver and push hard or tap lightly as the tensioner you are against can sometimes stick and stop loading the chain.
What noises are you talking about, please inform us before doing anything, better still go to the dealer if you are not that competant with bike mechanics.
Like i said hard to tell, it also could mean ya stretched the chain, but without having it apart to measure it bugga who knows, even with valves touching the pistons how can you be certain they didn't bend?.

there are many things to consider grasshopper. :?

I'd replace both to be sure you get the faulty part mate. Gonna be a bus load cheaper then a complete rebuild on the motor.

Well first off all the problem started befor this winter with some strainge
ratteling noises.. a local mechanic check the tensioner wich in deed stopt doing his important job.. but could be fixed and was later re fitted...

But yesterday the whole noise came back but much louder.... that is what has happend the bike concerning isn't mine but of a friend.. so I am gathering information on what to do .....

Hard to know without having the bike, best to take it to a dealer/repairer, at least they have the gear to check it properly.

Hey update your info so we can tell where your from, I wouldnt start the thing unless i thought It was right those sounds you describe can lead to a costly repair.

Get it to a dealer quick and you might save some money as they know about their brand of bike engine.

I cant recomend a good mechanic as i dont know where you are from.

I see you aare a international visiter/newbie try http://www.zx6r.com they are more into the pulling apart /home mechanics, anything to do with engine internals and lound banging sounds i would put on a trailer and take to someone that knows what they are doing.

A mate had a problem with the cam chain tensiner on his 99 zx6r race bike, lots of bad noise.. He took it and went to the Kawi to shop to get another as it was busted. It seems that there has been a problem with the tensioners on that model and the new one they stock is much different and supposedly stronger.
He pulled it out at the track at about 9 in the morning and had it back together and riding by about 12. That included nearly 2 hours to get to the dealer and back..
