Slightly of topic but my new 9 has a couple of extra bits below the intake inside the fairing. I actually figured these were to catch the water that comes in through the intake as both of mine were absolutely full....
Are they in fact resonators? Or is the 9 different and has a couple of empty water bottles designed to be filled by rain?

the 9 was in fact designed for extreme distance riding. so far out of the way that water cannot be found, they installed water bottles on the bike in case of emergencies.
not many people know this.

The resonators have no other purpose than to damp the intake noise to meet regulation.
Get rid of them and hear the airbox HOWL
They're quite common actually. Even my old (1994) honda Civic has one.
