No such thing as a silly question.
Yes that looks like it's where the oil goes.
What kind is a matter for much debate ;)
For the older beasts you might want a mineral or synth blend variety rather than full synthetic - I found Penrite to be good in the older engines.

But - I suggest waiting for the gurus to speak up regarding the best things for the old gpz1000

If you want to buy one have a look at http://www.repairmanual.com/motorcycles/1986/34 - pick the one that's yours.
If you want online or pdf download, keep looking ;)

G'day mate, google is your friend. This could be your manual: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=40OCP5GP

And this is the perfect location for all silly questions.

That's correct, that's the oil filler cap. Use a motorcycle specific oil which is designed for use in a wet clutch motor.

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

+1
if you put car oil in it will cause problems such as clutch slippind and stuff

so the oil is for both the engine and the gearbox too? I was wondering, even though obviously bikes are manual transmissions (except scooters and some new retro looking honda) whether or not it needed any transmission fluid.

Mate shoot me a PM with your home address and I'll send you a ebook manual called "Motorcycle Mechanics".

It's dated 1977, but it covers all the basics, water oil, gearbox, fueling...all good stuff and it hasn't changed much since then.

just undid red cap (screwable sump valve thingy, not oil filler cap) )which let out a stack of oil, refilled it and now I can see the oil level in the window. the previous oil was that dark, unable to tell if indicator window was working all right!
