Stuffed Battery?

Last week my 10 failed to start :twisted: It turned over a couple of times then just made clicking noises in the relays.

I charged the battery and it fired up. The bike is being riddden twice a week, generally 30+km per ride - often more.

On Wednesday after the bike had sat for two days I checked the charge on the battery (12.2v), then started the bike and got 14.7v. Next day Bike was ridden 30km, parked for 9 hours, ridden 5km, parked for 2 hours and ridden 35km home.

This morning it didn't even turn over :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

I'm guessing dead battery, but an concerned that either the charging system is weak or that something is draining charge when the bike is sat for a few days. After sitting for 9 hours it started Ok, but not perfect.

Bike is two and a half years old and has 24,000km on the clock. It hasn't missed any services, but is due a major. I am disappointed a bike of this age and KM is having this kind of issues.

so you should be i got 118,000 ks out of my battery.i replaced that with a standard battery cant remember the brand it lasted 2 weeks so returned it for a yuasa which has done 33000 ks since and is fine.I would get theelectrics checked out by who ever you get your battery from.Im sure Kon would be glad to do this ;)

Mike

bike batteries need a constant (or near constant charge) or they die...they cant sit for a few days and not get used time and time again
which as we know happens....they also die quicker than other battery types due to the vibration on a bike unfortunately

get a newie...and a trickle charger to suit (speak to Red_dave about the charger...he got me mine for the 12)

I got a trickle charge (battery maintainer) from Dave last year, it boiled the CBR battery dry (only gets started very rarely), so am reluctant to put it on the 10 for any period of time.

I just wanted to make sure there weren't any other known issues, such as TRE's draining the battery. The charging system certainly seems to be working and stable.

If it's deliver 14 odd while running, then the charging system is fine. It just sounds like a bat flattery mate! Stick a new one in! You could complain to Kawasaki, but batteries are only warranted for 12 months methinks!!

My bike hasn't been started since May :oops:.

I have a Protecta brand plugpack trickle charger that puts out about 1A and when the battery is full turns itself off. This is ample to replace the natural self-discharge of the battery and the little caused by the clock and alarm. So so far it has worked without a hitch.

I hooked the charging leads up permanently to the battery and left the little plug under the seat. When I can be arsed I might put a charging socket under the rear numberplate. So far I'm not that arsed (as you can tell as I haven't ridden since May :().

This is what I have done with the CBR. The trickle charger has connectable leads, so you can fit rings, or bulldog clips and has an in line volt meter. I bolted the rings lead to the battery and cable tied the connector to the frame. Easy to hook up, but after quite some time the battery wouldn't start the bike - was also very light (ie very little acid left). I refilled the battery, but on the next track day it leaked. The battery has lived on the charger from new and died in 6 months.

yeah only a good idea to fill most acid batteries to about 50 half way, i filled my car battery up to much once and acid went all over teh electrics and caused heaps of starting problems!

If you have got 14.7v when its running the basic charging system (alternator & rec/reg) should be OK. If you suspect some residual current leakage you can check by removing the negative lead and putting your multimeter between the earth cable and earth terminal (with everything switched off). If something is draining the battery, you will get an amp reading by doing this test. Start at the highest range selection available for DC Amps and work your way down to protect the instrument.

If it's only got 12.2 after sitting for a couple of days, it could be the battery if its not something else drawing the power. A healthy battery should have about 12.6 when "resting".

Gee Mike , 2 and 1/2yr old battery . Reckon that will be the life of it , planned obselesence and all that .
Mind you the Yuasa that came with my 9 lasted 7 yrs until it gave the same symptoms as your 10 is doing . Changed it and no problems now . Couldn't afford a Yuasa tho . I think you get what you pay for with batteries

Batteries are like that... Sometimes they last forever and sometimes they don't......... luck of the draw

The Yuasa lead-acid battery in the Black Pearl has lasted > 10 years now !! And during that period, it has gone for as long as 6 months sitting in the garage - without being started once - and then when given a kick in the guts, it has turned over and started almost immediately !!

Its worth spending the coin on good quality batteries.

Even the battery in the MFP12 is still the OEM battery, and its now > 4 years old and still going strong.

Mike - time for a new battery. Get the best quality you can afford.

Threw a new Batt in Thursday eve, started great on Friday no issues. It even feels better riding - so I guess the old battery was drawing charge away from other areas.

Gave it a clean and lube Saturday, again no starting issues. Am happy again.
