What about if her #46 chromosomes aren't XX OR XY? That's what I'm trying to say - it isn't always clear.

One explanation............. she was abducted ;)

There are instances where people have both male and female chromosomes ie XXY so chromosomes alone can not be relied upon for testing.

Males and females actually develop from the same thing, it's only the introduction of testosterone that turns us male. Sometimes there are slightly increased levels but not enough to do the full job and you get abnormalities. It is actually quite a complex process that the fetus goes through to develop it's gender and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. You would be surprised at how many people out there have issues like this.

I've read all the information on gender currently being reported, blogged, forumed etc., and while it is true that there are people who don't fit into a conventional biological map of what a male or a female should or shouldn't have, I think the real issue here is the poor girls self esteem right now. I don't know, maybe she has had to deal with this type of doubt about her, all her life....maybe just now? Who knows, but at the end of the day, putting myself even in the shoes of a male having an apendage that is vastly different from all my mates, I would be mortified if it were to be made known to them, let alone the world!!! :(

I'm TOTALLY clueless on this news story except for this "Girl with male physiology runs fast".

What I'm thinking is, could she potentially run faster than any other "normal" woman, and maybe set world records no one else will ever be able to attain?

If you read up a little bit Tim you would find that prior to the recent world championships she was basically unheard of, at the WC's she blitzed the field by like 5 seconds or something.

Not sure about unattainable world records but if she (and I use the term loosely) has 3 times the normal female amount of testosterone then frankly I doubt she will be allowed to compete on the same level playing field as the other women, yet wouldn't have the physiology (I don't think) of competing with the blokes eitherso basically she's screwed as far as an athletics career goes I think you'll find.
