BNE people - interested in photos of your bike?

Postby rtyuiop » Fri Mar 04, 2005 9:01 am

Hi all,

I realised the other day that I've been a touch slack in my photography habit lately through lack of interesting things to take photos of.

I'm very amateur, but do have some good kit - a Canon 10D, decent lenses and a good flash. Some of my better shots from a holiday a while back are at:

and the closest thing I can think of to bikes I've shot before are at:

So if anyone's interested in getting some decent photos, I'm more than happy to take a heap of hopefully good photos if we can arrange a time and place... I'm also open to suggestions about the best location!

Cheers,

Danny

The other thing is I want to organise a sunday ride on the 13th n hopefully get a bigger turn out then we've had for a while. If you like you can jump on the back of my 9r for the ride. Janelle should be on her zxr4 n you could get all artie with a group of kwikas if you want.

Nice still shots u got there mate.

But the problem with these guys here is that alot of them want action shots.
Shots of their Kawasaki travelling at 100km/h.
Shots of their Kawasaki doing that nice tight corner.

I'm still learning how to satisfy those requirements.

The 13th sounds like a plan. Just need to work out a secure way to carry the camera bag (it's a shoulder bag).

I should be able to get people moving quickly without a problem RG, so long as there's a bit of sun around! The joys of a camera that does ISO 400 really easily and a fairly fast lens...

Cheers,

Danny

The main things I find are using the appropriate shutter speed for the shot, focus and location. For an action shot like the one below with the wheel in the air I had it set at 1/1000 sec. because I wanted to catch that moment, but it doesn't work so well for the shots of someone cranked into a corner because they don't look like they're moving that fast.

I found you could get away with around 1/250 to 1/100 sec. to get the motion blur of the background but still get a clear shot of the rider. The tricky part is panning with the rider so you get the effect right.

Get used to the shutter delay on your camera, and if possible set your autofocus on the spot the rider will be in when you take the shot before they get there. That way the camera isn't busily trying to autofocus while the rider is long gone.

Play around with a few different locations, inside and outside a corner, trying to catch them at maximum lean, a high spot above the corner looking down on a group works well. Bikes coming over crests look good too.

I still have a fair way to go, but the practice is half the fun

Oh yeah, I found my tankbag is a good place for the camera. It's not too obvious in the photo's, gives quick access to the camera and stays on nicely with any shenanigans

Thanks Mick, that's what I was wondering about - the shutter speeds I tend to use for planes to get a prop blurred are about the 1/250 area, so I was wondering if the same would work for bikes...

Mind you, if my panning skills are up to snuff (haven't had any practice in a while) I should be able to get them lower than that at shorter focal lengths, and get some good background and wheel blur happening.

You're gonna be on the Healville ride? I'm gonna have My D10 with me and I'm planning on setting up at a corner when everyone does laps. I'll also take pics at other places, let me know when and I'll get whatever

here's some of my samples...

I usually find a shutter speed of 1/250 or 1/500 works best. Depending on the day. If it's overcast tho, I normally give up and go home....

I've got a few pics from some race meetings I've been to, but I can't be bothered uploading them right now.
