Neutral Light - problem sorted out

Question for those that may know electrics?

What would cause the neutral light to come on every time the clutch lever is pulled in, even if it is not in neutral?

Looking in my GPZ500/ER5 manual a common theme is a Neutral switch (on the gearbox I guess) and a clutch switch (wonder where that could be??).

The neutral switch should be a wire coming out at around 7 -8 o'clock from the sprocket centre. They suggest disconnecting the wire to see what happens, and also removing the switch, the putting it back in without the sealing washer to check if that makes a difference. If removing the sealing washer works, then the plunger is worn and you need a new switch - do not ride it without the sealing washer! Put it all back together until you get the replacement part.

That's all I got, you're on your own from here 8)

I had the same problem on my ZZR - continued until the light was on all the time.
As mentioned it's likely your neutral switch near the front sprocket. Mine was clogged with lube - cleaned it up and all good.

you probably won't find anything about the workings of it - but you should be able to locate it.
It's actually a sealed unit inside the gearbox, but will have a wire attaching to it near the sprocket. Just unplug the wire, clean it out, plug it back in, and see if it makes a difference.

Just a thought (as this happened on my ZXR 750) the hole in the clutch lever (the one you put the bolt through) had gone oval, nuetral light came on because there was free play (not enough spring tesion to keep the lever taught). I replace the lever with an after market jobby for $19.95 and no more problems.

Bike shops wanted to replace the nuetral switch with prices from $95.00 too $280.00.

there is a short some where between the lever and the light.

could be the lever. but to get a better solution u need a multimeter to test and see where the problem is :!:

James aka StarDrifter found the fault and temporarily fixed it so T has only neutral light when in neutral...lol I just gotta find a clutchblock switch from somewhere.

Thanks again James we owe you one.
