Does anyone no in detail or details about these classic race bikes, how rare, hold there value well, how many are in aus or were bought into aus, what sort of $$$ would you expect to pay for a good one, are parts available etc etc?? any info be terrific thx...

they are pretty rare and will only increase in value as time goes by. As such, they are not worth a furtune right now, so just value them like an L3 plus a bit. If it's a genuine road bike which has never been raced, it could be worth a lot more, depending in condition.

I expect it would be pretty rare for an M models to come up for sale, particularly a road bike. But as luck would have it, there is currently one on ebay. It's got a 955cc big bore motor (original motor included) with a starting bid of $5,900 and is in Bundaberg, which is about 3 hours north of Brisbane (not sure where you are so didn't know if you knew this ). There was also one on US ebay recently with a buy it now price of US$6,000 (A$8,500 )

Dave (madkaw) used to have one as a track bike and he would probably know more about them. I expect (new) parts would be nearly impossible to find and secondhand parts nearly as hard. This site has some good info http://homepage.ntlworld.com/webzxr/zxr750r/

Yep, I had one for a while...
Only 500 made and only about 50 brought into Aus. Most were race bikes and more than likely trashed so wouldn't be many left.
Brian (greenman43) had a few and is quite the anorak when it comes to info.

Mine, was a 93 M1 race / track bike.
The std M1 had flat slides, close ratio gearbox, adjustable swingarm pivot, aluminium tank, compression adjustment to forks and the roadie had a single seat tale.
Mine had a few more bits like carbon airbox and intake, ohlins shock and a few other bits.
It also had a few problems that have been well documented on this site....

Not sure about there collectability but if someone wants one they will pay for it as theres not a lot to choose from.

Mine had the original engine and frame and all the numbers were confirmed.

It wasn't pretty when I bought it for $3200....


But was when I sold it for $8000..

I remember years ago just before I bought my first ZX7R there was Eric Bana's M1 up for sale for not a whole lot. Would have been good if you could have got that along with a pic for authenticity

Once again more info... thx guys, what problems were common with these models, have heard the early h1,h2 gearbox dramas and crank issues. More interested in 93,94,95 zxr's. Madkaw what was the M1 strenghts,weaknesses if that is a word?

There were no serious issues with the 93 to 95 that I am aware of, they were pretty strong. The negative of this model was probly the weight, at about 200kg they were pretty heavy, but as Brian can attest, this can be stripped if you have time and money.
The M models flat slides can be a pain to get right, but once sorted are well worth the effort. There not to good on the road as they don't make good power until up in the rev range and can be a little rough down low. Once up in the revs they sing and are great for the track.
The front end is good, the rear suspension can be tweaked to give better feel with differnet linkages, mine had TKA ones but std is still ok.

I found adjusting the swingarm pivot upwards caused the chain to tear through the chain guard so that remained in the std position.

Mine only had about 112 to 115hp (depending on the dyno) but it handled great, brakes were good and was easy to ride.
When it was running well it was a good bike, unfortunately in the few years of ownership that was rare, I think it went ok in the Easter weekend of 07 if I remeber correctly.. Don't let that put you of, mine had a unidentifiable gremlin that after numerous strip downs, tests, replacement parts and huge amounts of time could not be found, until I sold it.... I believe its running fine now.

It did get me on the front row in my first race meeting at the Barry Sheene in 07.. (yes, its my only glory, unfortunately I finished 4th overall and got nothing.. )
