MMMMMMM Alienware :tonqe: I'd give a nut for their top of the range gaming lappy.

I've got a Toshiba X205 SLi 1 running Vista. The machine itself is awesome, Vista still has some probs with older programs though. It's not too bad once you get used to it, just like XP when it first came out (although I still prefer XP) and with most package deals these day you can get a downgrade disk that allows you to roll back Vista to XP. I've never had a prob hardware wise with my Toshiba, and its been some fairly intense places. I would suggest looking at this mob

they have some of the cheapest prices I've seen. If you find something you like, have a search for it here as well

Dont settle on the first price/product you like. Have a look around, you will prob find a better price somewhere. And remember, DON'T PAY FOR AN EXTRA THAT YOU DON'T/WILL NEVER USE!!! In other words, if you want a word processor, don't let a salesman talk you into something with the latest graphics cards coz it will make the fonts look better.

Good luck

Don't forget your password! Easy to get around in XP but.
We rent 200 or so laptops.
Dell 6400 last of our Dells now we do F5RL or X50GL ASUS Laptops, built in webcam, wireless etc and very reliable plus if it don't come with XP I can give you their XP for free. They also come with restore discs so if the HDD dies you can still restore with no hastles.
I can get you a mates rates quote if you like, just let me know. :kuda:

funny enough i used to work for HP, the irony there is the compaq laptops they made were better than the peice of crap HP ones they spat out!!
kawasaki250 wrote:if you run vista get atleast 2gb ram, and 250gig HD, 2ghz Intel duel-core 2 duo

kawasaki250 wrote:vista is ok just bit different getting used to then XP and you have to authorise everything which sometimes ant bad as things have tried to run when i didnt want them to so ya click no hehe :)
Disable UAC if it gets in your way in day to day activities, shouldn't though, but unfortunately it seems to..
kawasaki250 wrote:HP are pretty good, i have had to do a warranty claim already ( ) haha but it was only cause i wasnt happy with the battery life, it would only last about 30 mins on a full charge just cruizing the net, so i called them up and another one got sent out straight away, no questions and its the better life option you can get, for nothing (oh only 25 mins on the phone :P ) hehe.
See above, shit product, but i have to give it to them for great after purchase support.

laidback1952 wrote:Others have said it all....you get what you pay for. Vista is OK but like anything new some people find it hard to CHANGE. Remember when XP turned up everyone bagged it for being hard to use, unsecure and developed by an unpopular organisation. When Windows 7 arrives everyone will be saying that it's worse than Vista.
Used the beta a bit, didn't mind it *too* much, seemed faster on the same hardware, was even USEABLE on a 1ghz P3 with 1 gig of ram! (about 2/3 the speed of the same system running xp). Not a huge fan of the interface, but it seemed to make sense, and ive been told there are a few improvements in the works since the beta release i messed with came out. I'm not a big fan of vista but i do use it a bit just to make sure i'm familiar with the damned thing for when i have to mess with it.

laidback1952 wrote:Finally - check some brochures first to get a feel for prices and try to get some software or extra warranty thrown in. Also check manufacturers sites for extended warranty as they are usually cheaper. Remember a PIII with windows 95 or 2000 will run the internet as good as the best PC in the world...at least at the moment.
Very true, and just like a bike, go out there to dick smiths, harvey normans and any other place you can think of and get your mits on the hardware and see how it FEELS to you.
laidback1952 wrote:Good luck with your quest and remember as soon as you buy it specs will go up and in 3 months time you will want a"better" one....same as bikes.
Shit yes, i finally got the shits with my old p3/1ghz laptop and got a p4m laptop, about to throw some ram in her, should last me another 4-5 years (how long i have had the ibm for when i bought it second hand).

Good Laptop.
Only ever have probs with Chargers and Batteries but there a hell of a lot cheaper to replace out of Warranty than the ASUS.
Asus F5RL battery $215 posted (not $50)
Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery $50 last time!!! (no not posted)
