Well horses for courses, do you want ultra portable and compact like an ASUS netbook eepc 901 for pic loading for the net that is perfect for slightly rough stuff as in on a bike or do you want power for presentations, video editing etc.. and something huge that replaces the desktop pc?

Long way in between and you can customise whatever you want and get it! Just gotta know where and how

i just upgraded my laptop, i went from a compaq little shitter, to a you bute HP one (cost about $1800) still not the best of the best but its pretty sweet.
if you run vista get atleast 2gb ram, and 250gig HD, 2ghz Intel duel-core 2 duo its the new of the new lolz
vista is ok just bit different getting used to then XP and you have to authorise everything which sometimes ant bad as things have tried to run when i didnt want them to so ya click no hehe
HP are pretty good, i have had to do a warranty claim already ( ) haha but it was only cause i wasnt happy with the battery life, it would only last about 30 mins on a full charge just cruizing the net, so i called them up and another one got sent out straight away, no questions and its the better life option you can get, for nothing (oh only 25 mins on the phone ) hehe.

In our family we've got 3 dells, and they're all still perfect. They've all been "high spec" machines and i think that's important.

One 15 inch maybe 6 years old gets abused going strong.

One 17 inch family pc going strong maybe 4 years old.

One 13 inch one year old had the whole motherboard replaced DAY AFTER it failed by a tech at home! Otherwise great.

I think the secret with laptops, (whatever the size or use) for it to last is buy A GOOD ONE from a reputable company, not the entry level or slightly-upgraded one.

Yes, will probably end up sticking with the tried and true Dell. I like the Macs but they are quite pricey.

if i didnt have to run a PC cad program for work, i would find it unlikely i would consider buying something other than a mac, but if i had to go for a windows platform machine then i'd say either hp or dell studio (xps if u want the super duper powerful version)

I have a Toshiba Satellite with the 17" screen and the separate numerical keypad (good for data entry, myob etc) and Vista. Not a big fan of Vista, some of it is ok but some of it gives me the shits.

I'm a newbie to this forum but have been using computers for many years....I can even remember when people did not have computers and the head of IBM said that the world would only ever have 5 or 6....how wrong was he...

Others have said it all....you get what you pay for. Vista is OK but like anything new some people find it hard to CHANGE. Remember when XP turned up everyone bagged it for being hard to use, unsecure and developed by an unpopular organisation. When Windows 7 arrives everyone will be saying that it's worse than Vista. I have a Toshiba Satellite core 2 duo 4GB RAM/120GB HDD. You don't have to use all the features and make sure that you don't run too many programs at once. That will slow ANY operating system including the Linux family.

Finally - check some brochures first to get a feel for prices and try to get some software or extra warranty thrown in. Also check manufacturers sites for extended warranty as they are usually cheaper. Remember a PIII with windows 95 or 2000 will run the internet as good as the best PC in the world...at least at the moment.

Good luck with your quest and remember as soon as you buy it specs will go up and in 3 months time you will want a"better" one....same as bikes.

I have an eepc901 SSD netbook which is compact and perfect for bike travelling or any travelling for that matter and thats why I bought it, and veiwing KSRC of course.

Cons, not a lot of onboard storage (aftermarket SSD drives are getting larger and cheaper, fat fingers wont like the keyboard as much,somewhat slow ~ application dependant but does get it done, no dvd drive but these things can be overcome So yeah a little awkward but a fair trade off for size.

Pro's
Compact, light, rugged with no spinning drives, just a neat unit really. All the usual ports and wireless connections, fast bootup like 30sec or less (until you load all those sillery programs to run at startup),XP home or linux avail.

If you are a bit of a geek this is perfect because shitloads of technoheads have one and the mods and tricks are plenty, if you have NFI about geekness it's still good but you will need to watch your storage space. Attach mobile 3G and your good to go!

Well depends wat u need it for, u can get the bottom end models which are still very reasonable for around $1500. Then you can go to the top end models for close to $5000!

So if you aim anywhere in between that range you will get something pretty decent. I have the base model with a few extra upgrades and i haven't had any problem. its locked up 1 once cause i crashed it, i have never had to format it and just keeps on going!
