Stripped sump plug

faaarkkk i feel like an absolute idiot.

after what can only come down to operator error of a torque wrench i've managed to strip the thread from my sump plug.
you wouldn't believe how pissed off with myself i am.

plan is tomorrow to try to get a new plug 1 mm larger than the old one as well as a thread cutter to match and cut a new thread.

no matter how much bagging i get (and deserve) there's no better place for info than here, so looking for advice / places to go / past experiences, anything you can tell me to help out.

If i can't get it sorted i'll be hiring a bike for the track day i think. But i'd rather not do that because the excess on crashing one .. well lets just say i'd rather not think about that.

ok gonna go have a few beers and calm down.

I feel your pain.. I had a similar experience although it wasn't me that stripped the thread. I picked up my bike after a tune and servie and headed out to the track. After paying out $130 for the track day, I warmed the bike up to see oil dripping out the sump plug. No probs, I'll just tighten it up a bit....... :oops: .. It never tightened and the oil drip turned into a flow...
I packed up and tried everywhere to get an oversized sump bolt to no avail...
I ended up getting (free through work so I don't know how much) a heli coil thread repair kit and whacked it in a couple of days later... It works great, uses the same sump bolt and can be tightened up to more torque than the orig..
Piss easy to install too.... I now have a range of em.. just in case..:-)

they sound like they might be the go... what sort of places stock them? preferably that are open on a sunday :)

with the drilling part, is that likely to leave metal crap in the sump? would it be a good idea to run for a short while then change the oil filter?

Does the bolt do up at all or is it loose as?
You could always try loctite threadlocker as a last resort...l did the same to my dirtbike and it held up ok but l had to replace the loctite every 2nd ride till l got a recoil kit.
l cant remember the part number but it is/ got to be oil resistant.
l know k-mart stock most loctite brand threadlockers.

it stays in place but wont tighten.

gotta say this place rocks ... feeling so much better about it all after the info.

Its likely you will get some shavings in the sump. I dropped the sump enough to get my hand into the area so I could clean it up. I didn't have to take the exhaust of so it wasn't a big problem.
Alternatively, you could flush it out with some light grade cheap oil.
Just be careful how high you turn the heli coil thread in as you don't want it higher than the orig thread or you could get a build up of crap around it that won't drain out...

Ouch!

bad timing... good luck with it mate.

Never had to fix one personally, couple times i just changed bolt sizes and let it self thread itself again.. lol

Oh, bugger! I'm with Dave, a helicoil sounds the go.

I only ever do my sump plug up with a spanner, and only ever tight enough so it doesn't fall out. Haven't had any problems yet.

well not much luck today, nowhere had anything even remotely useful.

however my dad, who shall henceforth be know as 'McGuyver' made a plug with a nut and bolt with rubber wrapped around the bolt between the head and the nut which fit in, then once the bolt was tightened it expanded the rubber and plugged it nicely so it is rideable! :D

so im gonna get up at the crack of dawn tomorrow and find a bike shop who can heli coil it for me, hopefully in the morning and get the thing ready for phillip island.

it's gonna happen!

I hope you put the OLD oil back in..

cause cause if there is any metal in there, you can flush out the oil afte ryou get it fixed, and replace it with the new oil...

nah i put brand spanking new oil in... the old stuff had been sitting round in an uncovered pan for a few days so wasn't game to use it. didn't actually think of it to be honest. but at the moment i just want to get it going for tuesday and bugger the cost.

Gregs coming round my place about 1:30 or so, after work.
Dunno what time Simmo's picking you up, there isn't any hurry to get there, so you should have plenty of time.

he was thinking about 12 .. which reminds me i gotta ring him (simmo i'll pm ya now and ring you about 10am tomorrow)

if i can get the bike done and home by 12 to pack that would be cool.

if not, i'll see if simmo can pick me up some fuel when he gets his and then i'll ride down later in the day/evening.

I'll trailer the bike home, thats the important one after i'm knackered from trying to scrape bits of my bike all over the corners (not matty fashion though : ) )
