KTM 690 sm

Postby Disco » Thu Feb 26, 2009 8:42 pm

Just wanted to know if these big bore single cylinder 4 strokes need a lot of maintenance.....Are they good reliable touring everyday riding bikes....

My brother had a DRZ-400 and it was like oil changes every 500km's  ...Are these the same?

Want something a little more comfortable on the back....

What about the DR650? low maintenance, enough grunt to get you out of trouble (or into it!!) and quite comfortable as well. :D

euro is not as reliable as jap. Singles are the easiest bikes to maintain hands down. Id do oil every 3 to 6.

Is the 690 the ducks guts enduro thing? If so they're pretty highly strung and probably need a bit of maintenance. Hoffs on the mark though mate, KTM's are nice and a little exotic but I've seen plenty of the motocross and enduro models crap themselves seriously when they're pretty new.

What about a zed thou?

i have a '02 exc400 and never had a problem with it!!! (except when a stick went through the radiator  ) i drop the oil every 3-4 ride but if it's touring then it wont be working as hard and getting mud and dirt everywhere so i would assume that you could service at later intervals.....

I rememeber chatting to a bloke who had 1 think it was the 690 or could have been the 990 superadventure, but either way he said that it needed ALOT of caring, and not only just the oil needed to be changed every X km's but needed water pump shafts and bearings replaced every 10,000k's - 20,000k's.

He reckoned if you took it to the KTM mechanic a service was around 200-300 for just the minor stuff. Sounds a bit dear to me!
But i'd still get 1 either way! i like the 690 and 990

So you gonna join the club and keep the 6 for a trackie :) :)

Now that I've got the trackie I'm thinking of getting a zeddie for the road instead of the 10

I have Aprilia SXV450 thats is full on with maintenance, the DRZ 400 SM is bullet proof and runs oil changes like a normal bike.

The 690 supermoto you can tour on and is pretty sweet with maintenance oil every 3,000 k or so but its more of a naked bike than a SM you want the 690 Enduro in SM spec for a proper motard
