Z1000 wont start!

Postby Saki » Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:03 am

WTF!?!?
Yesturday bike ws running fine, no problem at all. Today went to start the bike and its dead!

Now things i've tested. Disconnected PC3 incase i damamged a wire, and connected up stock loom. Nothing still.
Indicators work, horn works, dash comes on, battery seems ot have lots of life in it still..
When i hit the ingition button nothing, its like pressing it if the power was off.

So i assume nothing is getting to the starter motor..
i get all the funny clips and buzzes from the rear of the bike but hitting starter button gives me 0.

Any ideas ??

Although the battery will give you eonugh for lights / dash & horn it will not have enough to turn the starter motor hence the relay buzz noise............. jump start off the car or get the battery on charge for a couple of hours.
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

Cheers guys keep the ideas coming, i am trying everything i can! I dont want to have to pay an auto electrcian!

Wattie:
Are all the fuses on top of the ecu near the battery ? They are all good. Kickstand switch is that wired up from the kick stand to a plug near the clutch lever.
Have tried in gear with stand up and clutch in, have tried in N with clutch in and out also stand up and stand down.

Rossi:
I dont think the battery should be flat as its always been strong to start and there is nothing that should drain the battery... i will try the jump start.

Tried a roll start also and its no go.

Keep it coming guys!

Only thing i can think, is i wash the bike but the weather has been hot here. so I assume its all dried out.

When u press the starter button there is nothing. But everything ese works. So sounds like no power to the starter motor. I might try a dummy start on the starter motor so if thats ok, but i am really stumped! Perhaps a wire has come loose or something of that nature but i am really unsure.

Definitely sounds like something to do with one of the ignition cut outs or kill switch. Make sure your sidestand switch isn't stuck up with chain lube, also flick your kill switch on and off a couple of times to make sure it's not sticking and make sure it hasn't got any corrosion in it.

kickstand switch i havent checked yet, good idea, i have washed that lately so could be stuck.
Let me check. Killswitch on the handle bars moves freely, its a reasonably new bike and never had a problem with that!

Kickstand good idea tho!

K im unsure if there is a button on the kickstand like the 9, but just did a roll start and success it runs. So its comes down to the starter button not igniting the starter motor.

Perhaps when i washed it could water get int othe button or is it too tightly sealed ?

another other parts to look for in the starter phase ?

yep sold, $50 posted to you. Good buy :kuda:

Battery terminals are clean and sparking good, starter motor terminals could be the problem. Will pull the wires off have a look see! Button doesnt make a an audible click either.

is there any other modules or relays that are part of the starter ?

Yeah i might pull the starter switch off and see if there is anything that doesnt look right there.

But also wanted to know if there are any relays on the bike which anyone is aware of, or if its switch to starter motor and thats it.

K bike now lives.

I narrowed it down the starter switch not engaging so decided to pull the switch apart and have a look.

Got a microscopic allen key and a big deep breath and blew inbetween the spring which seperates the 2 connectors. lots of dust flew out and use the allen key to scrap all the gunk off.

Give it a whirll...... BANG off she goes!
So starter button was just blocked and corrided with dust and crap!

Close thread thanks!

if u pull starter switch off and disconnect the terminal plug u should be able to test the switch operation with a test light or multi meter do the same with the kill switch
