Pom heading for Oz

Postby MaxMan » Sun Dec 28, 2008 5:39 am

Hi All,

It looks like maybe be posted to Perth from September 2009 for a three year assignment. Presently I have the following bikes in the UK:
2006 registered ZRX 1200R A5 in green
2005 registered ZR1000 A2 in red
1992 ZR1100 A1 Zephyr in maroon.

The second hand bike market has crashed here in the UK, so I intend to bring two of the bikes out with me. As I will have only owned the ZRX for 10.5 months on my departure, this bike will not meet the personal import criteria for oz of 12 month continuous ownership, so I will be forced to sell .. Shame as it has 1,955 miles on it :(

Can any of you help me with a few queries I have

1) Will the ZRX1200R be available in Oz in 2009? It was discontinued in the uk in 2007
2) Where is the best place to get a new ZRX1200R in WA, what price would I expect to pay? (on the road price)
3) What are the roads like in the Perth area, twisties or just long straights?
4) Is dirt biking a better option?
5) What is the cost of bike insurance? (45 year old, fully comprehensive?)
6) Any idea what the difference in the UK vs the Australian spec bikes are? In the uk the speedo's are in miles with km inside the mph scale. Are the Oz speedo's only kms?

Many thanks in advance.

It took me 4 months intensive labour to restore the Zephyr:

I fitted Kawasaki ZX636: "forks, rear shock, brakes and front mud guard", plus laser pipes, power commander and a custom map set up on a dyno.

Latest bike, I will be sorry to have to sell it without the chance of using it;

Not very familiar with WA but I "believe" it's by and large straight and flat till you get further north.. re the zrex, they will be available but 2nd hand I suspect, can't imagine a bike being discontinued in Europe yet available here new... for the insurance side of things, try www.qbe.com.au or www.ebike.com.au are 2 that I know of, also www.arista.com.au are supposed to be very cheap.

Speedos on an Oz bike are by and large KMH only as are all the road signs.. unless the bike predates the decimal introduction or is an import.. love the Zephyr, looks damn fine!!

Thanks for the welcome guys.

There are various bike discount houses here in the uk, with new bikes being very competitively priced. Here are a couple of examples:
http://www.tazmotorcycles.co.uk/
http://www.dkmotorcycles.co.uk/dkonline/home/
... is there anything like this is Australia?

Regarding the ZRX1200R, it was stopped in the UK due to the reducing sales, having now owned one I think it is one of the best all around bikes I have ridden... but it is 'horses for courses' as they say... for me it is also the 80's retro styling that I like, which is the era when I started biking. I note searching the web that they are still available in Australia with 2008 models for sale new at A$12,100.
Looks like there is a new version coming out, it will have the ZZR1200 gearbox and be fuel injected..

Cheers Mick & big Al for the welcome, just thought I would come over and see what a good job the Brits did in building Australia for you guys
Anyway, I am only coming over for a three year contract then I will be sent home again :(
Hope to get some good biking done in the sunshine, it will be a novel experience as the summer for the last three years in the UK has been rubbish. We do have France and Spain close by, so maybe not so bad .. here are some pictures of my 2008 trip

Riding through Spain, France and Italy is something I can only imagine at this stage but never say never. Those pics look amazing. I reckon some of those mountain passes would be magical on the bike! Welcome to Oz... Im so jealous :D
