Z750 v FZ6

Postby Naked Twin » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:33 am

I am thinking about getting a Z750, 06 - 08 model as I like the style and just looking to compare against the FZ6. With regards to the Z750 what are the good bad and the ugly points.

Anything in particular to look out for?
When did the model change to the new style exhaust?

Thanks in advance.

hey mate if u can find an example of the last AMSN for 2008 there is a naked comparo that has these two bikes in them... the new exhaust for the Z750 can in 2007 i believe and is the same for 08 and the new 09 models....

bad points is the suspension is only in one front fork (how bad this is depends on who you are)

and aside from that i think they are a shit hot bike ;)

Nick dont worry about the Zorst as you will probably change that anyway 8) The Zeddy has a ton more street cred & style than the Yammy it has wavy disks & upside down forks as noted by sex adict. more tractable grunt from the bullet proof engine mate what more could you want from a bike 8)

It is a sexy looking bike, hard to find in Green though, which is my colour of choice.

I do like the stock exhaust of the later models over the previous.

I test-rode (among other bikes) an 05, 06 and 07 FZ6 before I decided on my 07 Zed.

I found that the FZ6 more comfortable and would've probably been easier to live with. If I had to pick, I'd say the Yammy was the better-built bike (although there's not much wrong with the Kwaka either). Also a fair bit lighter, and it definitely feels the more agile of the two.

So why the Z750?

- You can feel the extra capacity, right through the rev range.
- Although the FZ is far from dull, the Zed just had that little bit more mongrel when the mood beckoned.
- Stock exhaust sounds much better than it looks.
- Stable but chuckable in the fast bits. Front suspension is better than it looks on paper.
- Dash is well laid-out and easy on the eye.
- LOOK AT IT! I still catch myself sometimes looking back at it as I'm walking away. FZ doesn't even come close.

The bad:
- Rear shock. Harsh.
- It's a bit on the heavy side. Then again, so am I.
- The seat is definitely not tour-friendly.
- Brakes look nice and do okay, but won't exactly send you flying over the bars.
- Riding position puts the wind right on your chest (although no worse than other nakeds).

The ugly:
- The can. Mine looked even worse than normal, as it had some minor scuffs on the black bit (shaved a chunk off the purchase price, though).
- Storage space. As in, none. Not even for a disc lock. You've got luggage hooks but there's not a whole lot of protection for the paintwork. There's bugger-all space under the pillion pad, even less under the rider's.

(I never tested the 08 model FZ cuz it was out of my price range. According to the AMCN writeup, torque was much improved in this model. Probably still wouldn't have changed my decision.)

Nothing a set of aftermarket levers wouldn't fix, but on my 06 Z750, between 8 and 10k rpm the clutch lever gets an annoying "buzz" - gotta rest a finger on it to stop the noise boring into my brain through the helmet and earplugs.

06 & earlier were the same, 07 & 08 where pretty much the same (new exhaust & "fatter" looking), 09 - dunno..

Ground clearance is a bit average (I'm missing a fair whack of the LHS peg after doing a track day at PI), but then again, it's not exactly a supersports.

This is a good comparison between the two.
